He thought he had just broken or dislocated the finger. He found out otherwise when the fingertip didn't come out with the rest of his finger. The only thing that would make any sense to me with the play, is maybe when he went for the wrap up his fingertip got caught in the belt loop of the other player and the force of himself and the other player going opposite directions just sliced it right off.
