replicant_argent is referring to something different. When you hit F9 it will show all the open windows for a given desktop.
Spaces is a virtual desktop program, so you have a bunch of different desktops to work on as it were (I like mine to be set up to use 4). If I'm on desktop 1 where I'm using Word, Firefox, and Excel and hit F9 then all of those windows will show. If I have windows open at the same time, but on a different desktop (say iTunes and Quicktime on desktop 2) they won't show until I switch to that desktop.
If you're using a desktop with one of the newer desktops, you may have to reassign the key shortcut for the F9 function that replicant-argent referred to because on these keyboard F9 is also used to raise the volume.
