NHLPA approves NHL realignment plan
Mike Brehm, USA TODAY Sports6:03p.m. EST March 7, 2013
Executive director Donald Fehr said the NHL Players' Association has given its blessing to the league's realignment plan for next season.
The league, which has needed to make changes to its setup since the Atlanta Thrashers moved to Winnipeg in 2011, will go from the current six-division alignment to four. The Detroit Red Wings and the Columbus Blue Jackets would move to the Eastern Conference and the Winnipeg Jets would move west.
In the Eastern Conference, Detroit would join the Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning and Ottawa Senators in the Central Division.
Columbus would join the Carolina Hurricanes, Washington Capitals, Pittsburgh Penguins, New Jersey Devils, Philadelphia Flyers, New York Rangers and New York Islanders in the Atlantic.
Winnipeg would join the Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators and St. Louis Blues in the Midwest.
That leaves the Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Kings, Phoenix Coyotes, San Jose Sharks, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks in the Pacific.
Fehr said that the new setup would be re-evaluated after the 2014-15 season.
"Our next step will be to bring the proposed plan for realignment to the NHL board of governors for its consideration," deputy commissioner Bill Daly said. "We will update the status of the process as future developments warrant."
