A friend's father recently was struggling with cancer and it became very difficult for him to move around. They got him a Droid Tablet, and he absolutely loved it. He loved being connected and getting to interact with people. I haven't searched the specifics, but there are less costly hardware platforms than Apple. I'm not trying to play the old MS/Apple game, just pointing out that when on a budget you might want to consider other brands.
