My favorite franchises:
1) Grand Turismo
2) Final Fantasy
I'm a huge RPG gamer (not MMORPGS) so typically this leads me to the playstation (or more decently Nintendo DS) platforms.
If you're going for Madden and Rock Band, I'd get an Xbox, it's cheaper and most popular games are cross platform these days
