Words of Radiance, Brandon Sanderson. Book 2 in The Stormlight Archive. While only sometimes fatal, with treatment, it's a shame that he suffers painfully from logorrhea.

Last Argument of Kings, Joe Abercrombie. Book 3. I enjoyed the series but thought the ending was a bit abrupt and unresolved.
