Re: nice rums?

I'm sure you're right, they were the same distiller. The Guat Zaya got killed to increase the production of Zacapa, if I remember right it was when a new distributor picked up Zacapa. That should...

Re: nice rums?

The only rum that tastes like oranges to me is Pyrat (both Pistol and XO). The Trinidad Zaya is heavy on the vanilla flavor, very similar to Angostura 1919 (same distillery). Zacapa is similar to...

Re: nice rums?

I used to keep up with that but haven't seen it in awhile, thanks for putting it back in front of me! His reviews are great, but I really like the side-by-side comparisons.

Re: nice rums?

Were you there before or after Katrina? If I remember right, they found themselves in a tough spot after the hurricane and I think a new owner came in, resulting in some changes.

That's why...

Re: nice rums?

I think HC 7 is a fine sipper, it's very similar in style to some of my other favorites (for what it's worth, Zaya/Zacapa aren't at the top of my list).

Re: nice rums?

You're on the right track, I think Sailor Jerry is much better than the Captain. There are a few good rums that ought to be easy to find most anywhere. Bacardi 8 isn't bad, and it'll be everywhere....

Re: nice rums?

In that case, try the Mount Gay Extra Old, Appleton Extra, or Appleton 21 yr. I think those are best with a small ice cube instead of neat.

Anything less from those brands and you'll be...

Re: nice rums?

It all depends. I've never had Oronoco, but it generally gets ranked pretty good for a clear rum. Should make a killer mojito. I'm not a fan of the clear Mount Gay, never had clear Appleton. The...

Re: nice rums?

Cruzan Single Barrel is my 'old faithful'. I think it's a great value, and it's easy to replace (rum selection is slim in most of MD). I like Pampero a little more, but I don't think I've seen it...

Re: nice rums?

Depends on the rum. The sweet rums like Zaya, Zacapa, etc. I like at room temperature. Too cold and the sweetness overpowers the flavors.

I'm partial to a more 'dry' style usually (Ron del...

Re: nice rums?

Depends what you like. I'm a fan of both, but they're different styles, apples and oranges really. CSB is cheaper though :D

Re: nice rums?

Every time this thread gets bumped, I get thirsty. I asked Santa for a bottle of Vizcaya, anyone else got rum on their list?

Re: nice rums?

I like the 'underwater rum'. Pretty smooth, clean, not too complicated, not sweet, fits what I like to call the 'spanish-style' rums, i.e. rums from Spanish-influenced islands like Puerto Rico,...

Re: nice rums?

My parents were on Grand Cayman this summer, brought me back a bottle of Seven Fathoms, and Havana Club. They actually brought 3 bottles of Seven Fathoms back, and managed to get two different...

Re: nice rums?

I've heard similar things, seems to be a love it or hate it kinda thing, with more people in the 'hate it' camp. I'm a big fan of Black Seal, and most of Cruzan's other rums, had high hopes for...

Re: nice rums?

Never tried the Blackstrap, been meaning to though. If you've got a bottle of Gosling's Black Seal, how does it compare? If you don't... go get one ;)

Once the rum bug bites, you're done. Don't fight it, just go buy more :D

Re: nice rums?

I can't tell a difference. I've tried 'em side by side, both have heavy notes of orange/citrus and are fairly sweet.

Re: nice rums?

Never had it, but it comes from the same distillery as Zacapa and the original Zaya, probably a good indicator of quality.

Re: nice rums?

Been meaning to post about rum, had the chance to try a few new ones over the holidays:

Bacardi 8 - I was pleasantly surprised. A lot more flavor in this one than every other Bacardi I've tried,...

Re: nice rums?

Sweet flavors are much more noticeable at warmer temperatures, so use less ice. I like sweet rums like Zaya and Zacapa neat. If that's not your taste, try a single ice cube. If THAT doesn't work,...

Re: nice rums?

From what I've read it's about 50/50. Seems like the people who were diehard Zaya whores prefer the old version, but most accept the new one is good, just not AS good. The rest of the crowd who...
