Going smaller is hard to recommend mainly because the dimensions of the frame could change to the point where its impossible to get to the proper position. Going too big, or going too small, you can...

oh and PS... a road fit should not take a few minutes... it should take a good amount of time especially if you have to change the stem, handlebars, saddle, or whatever it may me. On average expect...
