I was thinking of something with a remote that she could keep with her in the yard and set off if he sets foot on her property. A good dog would alert her to his presence so she could tend her yard...

This actually sounds like a pretty good idea. With a remote alarm loud enough to wake the dead and bring out the neighbors, unless he's really off the deep end, he would probably turn tail and run....

Personally, I prefer the stale cigar smell instead of cover-up odors. Something about those things give me a headache. :D
