Onyx mini belicoso

SmokeyNL gave me this slightly box pressed 5 x 52 mini belicoso by Onyx, a cigar with a nice blackened Connecticut broadleaf wrapper, Nicaraguan binder and filler from Nicaragua, Peru and the Dominican republic. The predraw is fine, and the aroma is quite strong. I smell hay, like I am in a stable.

After lighting the cigar I notice that the draw is fine and that the cigar produces more than enough smoke. The flavors I taste are coffee with wood, but after half an inch the wood is replaced by chocolate. This flavor sticks with me until I reach the middle of the cigar and then a spicy black pepper joins the other flavors. After 2/3rd the chocolate fades away and wood comes in its place. Lots of flavor, medium bodied. Nice cigar

Would I buy this cigar again? Yes, reasonably priced, good quality, nice flavors. This could be a ‘must have’ stick in my humidor

Construction: 8 / 10
Draw: 7 / 10
Appearance: 8 / 10
Smoke & ash: 7 / 10
Burn: 8 / 10
Aroma (first part) 7 / 10
Aroma (middle part) 7 / 10
Aroma (last part) 7 / 10

I love this cigar and make a point of always dry boxing them since they are known to have draw issues. Had one box that over half felt plugged on predraw before lighting. Dry boxing cured them. I try to keep a few of these on hand at all times.

Ahh....the infamous 94 rated stogie on CA (the other CA;))....ya'll can have these...I smoked a few of them a few years ago, but only tasted ash and wood....not a favorite.

Nice review. I've enjoyed the Onyx Reserves that I've smoked, but I don't buy them anymore because there are just too many others that are better at this price point.

I really like the full, dark Onyx smokes. Glad you enjoyed it.

I usually pick up a 5er of Onyx Reserves whenever I'm in the JR store (every 6 months or so), they're a favorite everyday cigar.

Forgive me but judging by the size of that stick compared to your hand, are you certain that's not a Torbusto? I've smoked many, many a mini and either you have small hands or that's the biggest Mini-beli i've ever seen.

The Onyx line was my first introduction into the world of Maduro leaf wrappers...I loved them at the time! I agree with Don's commentary..good flavors, great price....its also a great cigarto have on hand should you have a cigar "smoking" guest joining you...Great review as expected from you Don...
