USS SAILFISH Ashtray

I picked this up in an antique store in St. Augustine.
I know the history of the Submarine, just wondering if this is what they used on the submarine or is it a reproduction or some kind of commemoritive. It is cast bronze.

The pic is a little small but it matches the old diesel boats ones we have in our Submarine museum. BTW that's f*cking awesome!

If it is bronze and shows the age it appears to, then my guess would be it came off the sub.

When I was younger my grandfather (who served in the navy during WW2) gave my dad a couple. Does it feel light almost like pop-metal?

I guess I should have explained further. I meant "light" as in different than a cast piece.

For example, here is one from my grandfather's sub (silver star recipient).

it's deffinitely a formed piece using some type of cold mold.

BTW, both our ships were made in portsmouth NH.

Damn, you guys are coming up with some killer stuff! Bobby I have to say for the others what you already know that your Grandfather is a true hero. What those old bubbleheads had to go through will never be matched by any past, current, or future submarine force. The smallest combat force (Submarine Force) accounted for the majority of the tonnage for WWII and suffered the highest mortality rate. Those are real treasures in my eyes!

Re: USS SAILFISH Ashtray

Thank you for the kind words. And believe me my family tought me of the importance their role played as navymen and everyone else for that matter.

I know we have a couple more ashtrays from the USS Tench somewhere. But, i dont think anyone in the family is willing to give them up. My grandfather is one of the greatest influences in my life for the simple fact that he was honest, accomodating, and kind to others. It's funny, my dad and I are both cigar smokers and my grandfather was a pipe smoker. When he passed away my mom and her sister were settling the estate and asked my dad and I if we wanted anything to remember him by... we both picked the ashtrays.

it just gets me everytime I think about how he was just a downright good person.

My Dad was a Submariner as well and when I qualified he pinned his dolphins on me. Some things should never be let go of in this world.

Here is the one we have in our museum. It's heavy as hell.
