Even more Salt Test / Hygrometer pictures !!!

Even more Salt Test / Hygrometer pictures !!!

My first thread http://www.cigarasylum.com/vb/showthread.php?t=44715 about salt testing the analog hygrometer that came with my humidor motivated me to buy a digital hygrometer, actually, three.

After spending hundreds (thousands) on shotguns and shotgun shooting, I figured a few dollars for a digital hygrometer to keep my cigars safe wouldn't be too bad.

I purchased a Springfield Precise Temp from Wal-Mart for under $4.00, an Acu-Rite for under $8.00 also at Wal-Mart, and finally a Western Digital Caliber III from eBay for under $19.00 including delivery: http://cgi.ebay.com/CALIBER-III-DIGI...item3cb7ba088c

I salt tested the Springfield & Acu-Rite for 24 hours. The Springfield came in at 65%, and the Acu-Rite came in at 74%.

Since the Western Digital Caliber III specifically says not to salt test it, I ordered a Boveda One-Step calibration kit. The kit is really nothing more than a 75% Boveda mini humidity pack and a Ziploc bag.

After 24 hours in the One-Step calibration kit the WDC III was at 74%.

Truthfully, save yourself the money and order a full sized 75% Boveda humidity pack and put it in your own Ziploc bag.

So now I had a baseline. Both the WDC III and the Acu-Rite were the same, and the Springfield was way off.

After multiple test and retests, the only difference between the WDC III and the Acu-Rite were the price, $19.00 vs. $8.00, the size, WDC III is much smaller than the Acu-Rite, and the time it takes to get a correct reading, the WDC III is seconds, the Acu-Rite can be hours.

There you have it. Like everyone says, buy a WDC III and be done with it. Actually, now I have two.

Feel free to ask questions.

Before anyone asks, "do I have a wife, and does she think I'm an idiot", the answer is yes and yes.

Thanks for the post! I've had the Springfield for over 3 years now and I'm finding its a real POS.

I've never been able to get consistent, repeatable salt test readings in a single ziplock bag, no matter if it's salt or Bovida packs. I've always thought that if you can't repeat the test and get the same results, something is going on that you don't understand / expect.

At a minimum, I'd double bag the test. Best case, a mason jar (or old mayo jar, etc.) has given me the most repeatable test results I've had.

FWIW - YMMV - etc.....N.F.H.

That's all I've ever used, never trusted a Ziploc.

Agreed. I've found some Snapware "tupperware" at my local grocery store. Cheap and it works great.
