Looking for advice on watches!
 

I own a G-Shock I wear to work, which is great for what I do, but I am looking for a slightly more expensive nicer watch to wear out. I don't usually wear watches so I don't really know where to start. I was thinking something like a nice Citizen Eco-Drive? No diamonds or anything of the sort. Any recommendations within the line or other brands are appreciated!

I think you set a price range first.
There are nearly more watches out there than people.

My daily watch is a Wenger dive watch which I love. In the past year or two I have bought two watches from BOTLs here that I really enjoy as well. One is a gold tone Citizen Eco-Drive. It is perfect for me as a dress up watch.

Lots of good watches out there in that price range. Invicta, Citizen Eco, Seiko You also have to decide on a quartz or an automatic. I picked up an Orient auto about a year ago for around $100, its been a great watch for the price.

In your price range, I really like the Nixon 42-20's. I would have gotten one for myself, but my budget was lower, so I got an Invicta 2770.

I also have a Citizen Calibre 8700, which I really like - that's in your price range, too.

I think automatics are really cool, but at that price point, I prefer the accuracy of a quartz... unless there is a really accurate automatic that I just didn't find when I was looking.

The Eco-Drive's are nice, so are Seiko and Orient. Those should be in your price range!

I picked up a Black Mako. http://www.orientwatchusa.com/cem65001b-mako-p-64.html I'm not positive but I think it has a Seiko movement. I also like that it has a 30 hour reserve so I can leave it off for a day and it keeps the time. :tu

I like the Maka XL, but I am just afraid to buy a watch over the internet for fear that it won't fit my wrist.

What's the advantage to a quartz versus automatic? Never knew the difference. Thanks for the opinions I'll check them all night!

I'm guessing by automatic, you are referring to mechanical.

Bottom line — for just accuracy, go for a quartz, for quality, class, precision and historic value, go for a mechanical watch! And for some of you, who cannot decide, buy what you like to wear!

I can't say that I agree with that last paragraph. Sure, there is something about a mechanical watch that speaks to oldschool craftsmanship, but that I would argue that quality and class are in the build quality of the watch, not the complexity of their movements.

I'm kind of a watch junkie and I've owned just about everything in the 50 to 5000 dollar price range at one time or another, but the one that currently impresses me a great deal is the Seiko Superior line. Pictured is the one I have. Very well built with a finely finished steel case. A very good 23j movement and hardlex crystal with display back. Bought it for a little over 160.00. It's water resistant to 100 meters. I can't believe the price given the overall quality of this watch. It's as good as many I've owned at 5 times the price. Very accurate too.

Another happy Orient guy here. They come pretty large in the bracelet, Tom, but you could measure yours and call Mark and ask if they would work.
Wear mine everyday, love it.


Oh, and you have good taste, Tom, mine is the Mako. ;) I will most definitely buy another, probably a tank style for some versatility, but I do like the autos. Mark Kim is a good guy to buy a watch from, he was very helpful with me.

The statement certainly was a general one and painted with a broad brush, but I feel gave a general answer to the question of the difference between quartz and auto.

I agree with you, however, about the build quality being the final factor.

That's why I wear a Rolex.
