Looking for something similar to a Cuban

Hello, I just got back from vacation in Belize where I bought and smoked a couple Cuban Partagas Serie D No 4 cigars. These were basically the first cigars I have ever smoked, and I loved em. I usually don't like the smell of cigar smoke, but these were great. Can anyone recommend some similar cigars I can buy in the US? Thanks!

Where did you buy the cigars in Belize?:hm

Assuming they were real, my guess is they weren't, you won't find anything that is the same in taste.

Try the 'New Inmate Forum' and make an introduction. :tu

There are a few cigars people think are somewhat similar to Cubans, but I haven't necessarily agreed with that assessment.

Nothing tastes like a Cuban to me, other than a Cuban. :2

I've had a few PSD4s and they were excellent. No NC I've tried can really compare to it.

Wow thanks for the quick replies. I bought them at the Belize City Intl Airport duty free shop. They had quite a few to choose from but the kid working there recommended the No. 4. I still have the label, and through a little searching it appears to have been real.

Has anyone else smoked this kind? I just want something similar in style, I know I won't detect the subtle flavor differences. Honestly, usually when I smell people smoking cigars it reminds me of (cough) dirty diapers.

Never smoked a non-Cuban cigar that tastes anything likea PSD4.

If you want a similar size, maybe a Tatuaje P2 or Reserva J21 .

The j21 is what I would recommend

In case you haven't learned CA humor yet...that would be a bad idea. ;)

Well I'm sure regretting more and more not getting some "PSD4's" home with me. Thanks Icehog and Maverick I'll try a J21 for sure.

One that consistantly fools folks in blind taste tests is Cabaiguan.

Okay on a serious note. You should try the Illusione Epernay. I highly suggest you try it.

Years ago, there was a cigar rolled by Pepin Garcia. It was a home brand by Cigar King in Scottsdale, AZ. I believe it's the Habana Leon brand. Give them a call and let them know what you are looking for.

Be warned though as this was years ago. I've heard some of the cigars coming of out DPG's has declined in quality.

Our friend Ratters calls that the "taste of oppression" Although Cabiguan and some of Pepin's blends have hints, they are only posers. :2

:D

I agree that the Cabaiguan is a good smoke with hints. I also think the smaller "La Riqueza" has some similar tastes. But as these esteemed aficionados have shared... prefer them or not, nothing tastes quite like a cuban. My :2

Try the Tatuaje RJ21 Reserva

Re: Looking for something similar to a Cuban

I'll second the Tatuaje vote or Illusione Epernay. The one that tastes the closest to a Cuban for me was the Cojonu 09. It's much smoother than any other Tat I've ever had. Most DPGs have a good complex flavor but I find them much too harsh. The Cabaiguan I smoked was smooth but lacked flavor.

Nothing is going to taste exactly the same as a Cuban, but I've picked the Cojonu over a Partagas the last two weekends in a row. If they were cheaper, I would buy them by the box.
