Wear Your Helmets!

I got this from a very good friend this morning. It's a timely reminder now that it is spring and many of us are again riding our bicycles. (My friend will be changing his rear brake to the right side of his handlebars.)

***************************

Quote:

In the process of braking for a right hand turn after having pedelled hard down an incline, I raised my left hand to signal the turn which left only my right hand braking. OOOOOOOOOH - the dreaded front wheel only braking. What a bad idea!! The result was my back tire coming off the ground and pitching me headfirst over my handle bars. I landed on the left side of my back and my head. Here's the picture of my helmet...

Clearly, without my helmet I would have suffered a major brain injury. As it is, I got away with just a bit of road rash, a bruised pelvis, and pretty much feeling like I got run over by a truck. Uncomfortable, but something from which I should recover shortly rather than being seriously impaired, a veg, or dead. Upshot, wear your helmets and make sure everyone near and dear to you does too!

I remeber doing that about 40 years ago, luckily landing on the grass, helmetless. No brain damage as far as YOU know. ;)

It does explain some of the masshole banter though...

I always wear my skid lid. It looks goofy sitting a top my bulbous head but, if ever needed I should be good to go. Glad to hear your buddy has only minor bumps & bruises and will be riding again soon, could have been much worse.

Chris.....

um...well, words fail me here.

He was trying to signal, slow down AND make the turn?

Bad decision.

Many thousands of miles in the saddle here.

I've retired, at best guess, at least 6 different helmets through the years.

Here in Massachusetts he would be given a ticket for signalling. Glad that he had the helmet on.

Ouch! We (my wife daughter and I) have started riding again together recently. The girls wear helmets. We just had the conversation that I need to get one. Guess this kinda reinforces that.

BTW...I thought that the right hand was the rear break. it is on mine at least.

I grew up riding a bicycle every day, but never once wore a helmet. Somehow I lived.

I used to fly down hills on a mountain bike without a helmet. Had several crashes and my head narrowly avoiding rocks, cactus, and trees. Except for the occasional memory lapses and walking into walls, I'm fine!

It's amazing that 3 inches of foam and plastic can save your life.

I wear mine when I'm riding in NYC traffic, but don't know if it'll help much if I get run over by a cab or bus...

Did that myself about 15 years ago except when the rear tire came up off the ground the front wheel turned and I came down on the end of the handle bar on my mountain bike and broke 5 ribs.

Tis the season I guess. A buddy of mine was riding down his own driveway a few weeks ago when the chain broke and locked up the tire. It sent him @ss end over elbows and he ended up with a broken collar bone.

I had no idea they don't cast you up in that half frankenstine's monster pose any longer. They just dope you up and send you home in a sling.

Glad to hear your buddy walked away with scuffs only.

I used to never wear a helmet on a bicycle 25-30 years ago and I'd run down the canyons doing 40+. I bought a motorcycle and wouldn't go around the corner for a pack of gum without a helmet. Now I couldn't think of riding my bicycle without one.

Two years ago after crashing who knows how many times, I finally used my bicycle helmet. Glad I did.
