Putting together a Cooler or Coolerador
I thought I would post this for those folks that will be asking in the future;
Coolers are an inexpensive yet very effective way to store lots of cigars. They can be as fancy or as simple as you like. Instructions for putting together a cooler. 1. Find ice/chest or cooler.... buy much bigger than you think you'll need, trust me! 2. Rinse out cooler with a little soap and water, let it air out for a day to get rid of any plastics smells, never noticed any with mine. 3. Add humidification devices, Beads are great 4. Add cigars 5. Close lid..... your done, no need to season a plastic cooler. Options: shelves fans.... neither neccessary Heres a pic of mine.... hope yours works out as well as mine has. PM me if you have any questions. |

Thats awesome! What did you use for shelving, and are the shelved perforated to allow air movement?
I really need to get me one of these! |
Re: Putting together a Cooler or Coolerador
I just made mine and the most important thing is that you need spanish cedar inside. It's pretty simple to get too! While some people go out and buy planks to glue or double sided tape to the walls of the cooler, you can also go to your lcoal B&M and purchase empty boxes. I, personally, went to my local B&M and the owner sold me 8 for $1 each. The best boxes are the big Fuente boxes because you can break them apart and remove the paper covering them, get some good double sided tape and tape it to the cooler walls. Than go with long boxes for your churchills and such, and medium size slide top boxes for your robustos.
Also, for seasoning the cedar boxes, just get a spray bottle, fill it with distilled water, spray the boxes and leave it in the coolidor along with beads for a day. If you want to make cedar shelves, you can purchase cedar planks from numerous places. Southern California has "Rockler" stores which sell them in various sizes. Just measure out your coolidor, measure the wood twice, cut once, and glue. |

No vents in the shelves, there solid spanish cedar purchased from a local lumber yard. I've put beads on the different shelves, and havent had any problems with air circulation, I do have a couple Oust fans that moves things a little. Someone mentioned a Vino, they are very nice, and if you think high temperatures could be a problem it might be a good option. |
