Great Quote

"You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is about the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it."

~~~ The late Dr. Adrian Rogers, 1931 to 2005, Former Pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis , TN ~~~
Really good quote, last line hit it home for me. "You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it"
This thread straddles the line of becoming political in nature.
Tread carefully, posters. :2
heres a qoute that goes with the OP
"To take from one, because it is thought that his own industry and that of his fathers has acquired too much, in order to spare others, who, or whose fathers have not exercised equal industry and skill, is to violate arbitrarily the first principle of association, 'the guarantee to every one of a free exercise of his industry, and the fruits acquired by it.'"
No. It is someone's perspective/opinion.
There are no facts in the statement.
That being said, he does present a plausible perspective.
Re: Great Quote
The following quote is not, I believe, overtly political but a statement of the times when said and it is equally true almost 50 years later. "No nation has ever taxed itself into prosperity." President John F. Kennedy when he proposed lowering the maximum tax rates.
I disagree. People's opinions can be factual.
O.K.
If the statement is fact, then there really is no reason or room for discussion. Why else would you post this if not to discuss? And where would you expect the discussion to go if not in a political direction?
According to dictionary.com:
Fact: Something that actually exists; reality; truth.
Opinion: A belief or judgment that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty.
--
By definition, I don't believe an opinion can be a fact.
I pay $x in taxes = fact. My taxes are too freaking high = opinion.
Perhaps to serve as a reminder of a fact, much like the reminders we get to have a designated driver or wear our seat belts. Though those statements may not leave room for discussion, they still contain very valuable information...regardless on a person's political feelings towards DWI/seatbelt laws.
The OPs quote contains truth to it. History has shown that you cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. So if that is true, is it a fact?
Excellent point, Adam.
But posting a reminder in a public forum (whether fact or opinion) will lead to discussion.
And here is a fact. I initially felt this thread was started as a political statement. However, I felt that a reminder to all might keep it from becoming a political discussion and ultimately getting shut down. Proof that no good deed goes unpunished.
As long as it isn't French toast. :D
Thanks for sharing the quote Tombstone.
I don't think an argument of semantics is needed. An opinion can still have some truth to it and not be fact.
But back to the original post, I think it is a really good quote
It's a true statement Tombstone, just sucks that we do nothing about it but discuss it.
