Economical grinders?
 

I am a complete coffee noob. I think I am going to ask for a grinder for valentine's day, or at least something coffee related.

I don't have anything right now other than coffee cups. I will probably brew using a press, as I think it'll be most economical in the long run, and I don't mind it not being "automated." I saw some threads on here mentioning a press brand (bodum I think). I know they have those at bed bath and beyond which is in walking distance.

Anyway, besides the press, I know I'll need a grinder. Is there anything else I'll need (besides some beens)?

Also, what is a decent, but inexpensive grinder that will grind beans for use in a press?

Also, also... taking the brew to work in a thermos or similar won't affect the taste much will it?

That's more my speed than the first one. The first one posted looks awesome. I just can't see myself spending $100 at this point.

Right now I'm an occasional black coffee drinker, but I have mostly enjoyed the way too sugary espresso drinks at starbucks. Since I'm liking the coffee flavor more and more, and disliking the sweetness of the lattes more and more, figured I should just start brewing my own coffee to save money in the long run and drink better stuff than I'd get at the bucks anyway.

I saw two grinders at Bed Bath tonight, but they were $20 and $30 but looked MUCH cheaper than the one you posted, plus they were much smaller.

Edit... holy crap, that link you sent looks to be quite a deal. Even amazon has that same one for almost twice as much and it's factory reconditioned on amazon.

Be sure to keep an eye on Amazon for deals on Bodum presses. I got a good deal on my 4 cupper there, and there are usually good prices coming around.

BTW the grinder linked above is the one I have. It's a decent grinder for everyday drip. French press is pretty good, but I tend to get a lot of dust when I grind, so there is often silt at the bottom of my mug, which makes for a harsh finish. Not a deal-breaker for me, but you should know.

Thanks burn. I feel like such an internet buyer noob as last night I didn't even look at the shipping cost at that link, plus their reseller rating is not good.

That definitely gives me something to consider though. Looks like it'd be $50 or so shipped. I'd still like to find something cheaper, but I don't want to sacrifice too much quality or different settings to save a few bucks.

I have a $10 grinder from Albertson's, a ProctorSilex, it is quite and grinds just enough for me, since my wife is not into coffee, so something small for a 2 cup is nice. It is an all purpose grinder, the cord wraps inside the bullet by turning the top half of the unit. Worth the money, bought it while on vacation because I left my other grinder at home. Travel size, works for me.

See, that would probably be enough for me, but I don't want something that won't work well for a press, and I have no idea what will work well for a press or not. :D

I have what you need. Lightly used like 4 or 5 times. It needs a good home or else it's going to sit in the box for a couple of years until I get tired of looking at it and toss it out. Either PM your address or stop by and pick it up -

I only use a press. Okay so I lied, I use a moka pot once in a while too. Hey, it looks like a lonely grinder up there is need of a home.

I had a grinder that I used for coffee, now I just use it for spices, and when I buy my coffee I have grind it for me. I go through so much coffee it never has a chance to go dry.
