Serves the little ba$tards right. Does anyone else wonder how many little Hans solo ants are trapped in that thing? And is there a reason to do this at night?

Very cool!

I wonder how many ants were killed in the process? :)

That's really cool! I didn't expect the mold accurately capture all the tunnels in the colony like it did.

I sent the video to my wife, who is an art teacher. She is intrigue by it and we may have to do that as well with a few of the ant mounts we have in the yard.

Saw this one a few months ago about a university professor who specializes in ants and has been dumping molten aluminum down anthills for some time now. Towards the end of the video, you can see his collection of castings and how varied the architecture of the colonies are from one species of ant to another.

I also remember seeing one (possibly National Geographic) where they pumped a few tons of cement into a mega-ant hill and spent a few months excavating it. It was huge - like the size of a large house.

edit - found a segment on the concrete one:

That's amazing - really, really hot! :D (Pun intended).

We ever get any fire ants here on our place, I know what I'm going to do.

Awesome videos.
I'm thinking a big batch of plaster would work good. Once cleaned up, it could be painted flat white or dipped in thin plaster. I'd just like to have a small model and put it on a sexy base. It'd be sweet.

That's not what I wanted to say.

That's a BBC youtube video about ants, "Inside the Ant Colony". It's way too long, but I'm digging it.
Next I'm gonna find an "Inside the Bee Colony."

Ants get no respect!

I imagine people would be up in arms if they were pouring molten aluminum down prairie dog holes.

Gophers are fair game though, right?
