A week, two months, hey it is all the same thing when you have little kids. So I got it up and running yesterday and have done 45lbs so far, 30 where for seasoning the drum and went into the trash after.

What a machine! I am glad I had years on my Hottop to get lots of experience but this is just a dream to roast on.

Congrats Rob. That's incredible!! I need to read up on the Diedrich. Can you roast indoors without setting off the smoke alarms?

Re: My Diedrich IR-1 arrived

well yes u can, it is a commercial machine so it needs to be vented. not exactly a counter top friendly machine, it weights 135lbs so it needs a dedicated spot.

That is my machine they have as their add, lol

Congratulations.

I have decided that today will be designated "G-Rob Day" arbitrarily, even after you have had it for a while. You are officially one of the coolest people I know.

My wife would kill me. I would need to stick to the Franken-roaster.

Congratulations, that is a beautiful machine. I seriously miss home roasting coffee. Had a nice little Behmor counter top model for personal use.

Thanks Dan! I will gladly send some to you. I need to figure out some economical shipping and pick up at my door this next couple of weeks. Not looking to be in business but do need people to help drink the stuff and offset the costs of 100lbs of green a month.

My wife wanted to kill me for not hooking it up for 2 months! I was buying stale beans locally and she was pissed off, lol.

Burned up a Behmor in 6 months, moved onto a Hottop B for 2+ years then settled on the plunge into a commercial roaster for the garage. It is a dream to work on!

My god, man.... your friends here could have saved you from that. I can get some home roast to philly while it is still fresh, and you could have had a happier Queen.

Now that's balls deluxe. Good luck. How do you vent it?

I have no plans of selling coffee at this point in time. I got this to pair up with a larger roaster in the future. The biggest problem I have in selling beans is that shipping is a PIA and really makes it hard to justify costs for 1lb or less.

I direct vent it out the wall.

Sorry, been a while since I checked on this thread.

Re: My Diedrich IR-1 arrived

The Diedrich has been a pleasure to work with. Great control over the heat and airflow so any problems with the roast are all due to me.

I need to get the gas company out to my house to increase my gas line pressure then I should have no issues roasting 1kg with full control over the profile.

Re: My Diedrich IR-1 arrived

A little update after 9 plus months on the Diedrich.

It has been up and down getting used to roasting on a commercial machine, much of what I had learned previously needed a lot of refinement to get consistent results and I still have a ways to go. I admit there has been moments when I feel like it was a bad investment but I believe that is behind me now.

I see the next step in the near futur is to take on a few coffee lovers as test subjects so that I can get more practice.

Re: My Diedrich IR-1 arrived

GR....getting the IR-1 was a significant step for you. Akin to playing high school baseball and switching to triple A ball. It is not an unlearnable ramp, but putting in time is key....and writing down all you do....start weights, end weights, drop temp....you get the idea. Once you find your swing, replicating it is key. Then varying batch sizes, humidity, ambient temps, air flow....well....welcome aboard man. Never give up. Shoot me a pm anytime with any questions.

I wish you the best.

Re: My Diedrich IR-1 arrived

Awesome machine - I'd be glad to serve as a test subject if you ever want some second opinions. I did buy a nice Baratza grinder and a French Press...the reliable drip machine gets dustier every day.

I have yet to try my hand at home roasting; "...the next step off the cliff..." as my home roasting friend puts it....:D

Looks great - have fun - N.F.H.

Thank you Norm. I have been meaning to pm you but life keeps getting in the way. I would love to come for a visit when you are roasting and you have some time. I am also looking for some sources for greens in the 1/2 to full bag range and would love to pick your brain on this. I am starting the process of dealing with Atlas but any info you can share would be great.
