The Bourbon Thread!!

Bourbon is my drink of choice so I figured I would open up a bourbon thread. I'm especially looking forward to this years Antique Collection from Buffalo Trace. Some of my favorite bourbons include:

Elmer T Lee
Pappy
Basil Haydens
Rock Hill Farms
Woodford Reserve
Eagle Rare 17
George T Stagg

Just bought a bottle tonight to sample. Elijah Craig 18 Year. Reviews seemed good. Not much of a bourbon guy, but hoping to change that.

Your telling me! I have a bottle each of the Antique Collection on hold for me when they come.

I also just picked up a bottle of Four Roses Mariage and a bottle of their 120th Anniversary, both of which I have yet to crack open and try, but I'm looking forward to.

You have some good taste! I just picked up this bottle of Willett's! It’s extremely well balanced and smooth.

I recommend trying it sometime!

No, I must've deleted that e-mail. How much were they selling it for? I got it in my neighborhood for $38. The place I bought it is also expecting to get some of the special releases coming out next week. ;)

I am about half way through a bottle of Elmer T. Lee, I love that stuff... I have a bottle of Woodford lined up after that... I can't help but feel Woodford is a bit overrated but I do enjoy it..

Can't get buffaol trace or eagle rare 17 in NJ which sucks. Do you know if they are going to restrict this release as well?

BengalMan 10-16-2008 10:05 PM

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

Most likely yes.

There is also a VERY RARE Fire and Ice collection being released this year by Buffalo Trace which if anyone is able to get their hands on, I will gladly make it well worth your while.

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

My daily pour is Elijah Craig 12yo but I did buy a bottle of Bulleit this week since it was on sale. With the state run liquor store nonsense here there aren't too many choices.

BengalMan 10-17-2008 10:12 PM

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

Well, I once again fell into the "rare bourbon hole". I went to the liquor store with the wife to get a bottle of vodka for her (she ended up wanting the Donald Trump vodka because "it has a pretty gold bottle"). Walking up to check out I passed through the bourbon section and saw they had a few bottles of Four Roses Mariage left. Needless to say I picked some up to hang out with my Four Roses 120th in the cabinet. I'll let you all know how it is in a few days.

Bourbon has ALWAYS been me drink of choise,
I just stick with good ol' Evan Williams,

JohnRider 10-20-2008 08:13 PM

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

Call me a lush, but I always enjoy Knob Creek. It packs a little heat at 100 proof, but it just has that special twang that always brings me back. Other favorites of mine are Bakers, Woodford Reserve, and Eagle Rare.

(And you have not had Rye until you have had Templeton...definitely recommended.)

Haven't broken into them yet. I still have bottles of Stagg and Weller from last year left. I think I'll break into the Thomas Handy Rye this weekend though. I'll let you know how it is.

I had two bottles of the '07 that were fantastic. I'm down to half a bottle now:al

I concur with Woodford Reserve. This may be sacrilege, but I enjoy it with Diet Dr Pepper!

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

I'm new to the bourbon game. I've only tried Maker's Mark (It was a Halloween party and I was too sauced to taste any of it), Jim Beam (No thanks), and Wild Turkey Rare Breed. The Rare Breed, at 108.2 proof was a bit too strong to sip straight, but mix it with a coke zero and you've got my new favorite mixed drink. What would you recommend for me to try for under $40? I'd like to pick up a bottle on payday next week, and I want to try something new, but I'm in school, paying off a car, and trying to only work 25 hours a week, so it really can't break the bank. Any suggestions?

There are many great bourbons under $40. Below are some of my favorites:

Woodford Reserve
Basil Hayden
Elmer T Lee
Eagle Rare

Let me know what you end up grabbing and what you think of it.

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

I know they've got Woodford at the local Liquor store, maybe I'll start off with a bottle of that. I'll definitely report back. I wasn't a fan of whiskey until I tried bourbon, and I'm quite excited about it!

STYX&STONED 11-05-2008 03:15 PM

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

IMHO there is no better deal for the $ then Bulleit. After that I go for Woodford.

Sanitariumite 11-05-2008 03:21 PM

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

I think they have Bulleit there too. I'm heading there in a bit, and the price will make my mind as to which I'll be trying tonight. I will most definitely be posting back here with my review.

tsolomon 11-05-2008 05:16 PM

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

My choice would be Woodford Reserve or Knob Creek. I have a big bottle of Eagle Rare 10 which is good, but I really like the Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage 1997, it has some of most amazing flavors at a great price. :2
