Legit real Jamaica Blue Mountain

I know that there are rip offs on the internet. There are several coffee dealers that advertise Jablum Mavis Bank JBM and all things considered, they appear to be scam artists.

I guess my question is: Who sells the real thing.....Real JBM. Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Legit real Jamaica Blue Mountain

Only time I bought it was from Sweet Marias.

Expensive, but certainly legit if they're carrying it.

I hope this is not a threadjack but is there a legit site for Kopi Luwak? I've been wanting to try that but I'm a little cautious about seeking it out.

Unclebeanz sells it, and it's good stuff. They are down right now, because of a family emergency, but are slated to return to business later this month.

http://www.unclebeanz.com/merchant2/

Norm is also a regular here. He roasts his own stuff for sale, and has some good stuff. I'll be very glad when they are back online.

My cousin picked up the real thing for me while on a cruise in Ocho Rios. He got 2 lbs for me for like $18/lb there. Buying online, you're looking more like $35-40/lb for the real thing.

I bought it directly from a farmer in the Ocho Rios area for $16/lb. a few years ago. My wife and I stuffed our suitcases.

Japan imports around 90% of all JBM coffee and Jamaica consumes less than 1% of it, which is kinda interesting.

I heard the same thing, its been like this for 15 or 20 yrs.
I did some research on what makes JBM true JBM.
There is a certain area of acreage, if the beans are not grown
within this perimeter, it is not the real thing.
The slight climate difference, mist laying on this land in
the AM hrs. makes the difference.
I remember going to Negril in 1974, some coffee i drank then
was like rocket fuel.

I think a lot of what is labeled as JBM is "watered down", so it will have a blend of the real thing and some that isn't, so it's not necessarily all grown outside of that area.

If that is true (and I don't know that it is - just saying, if) and if annual production is the typical 6m-lb estimate

6.000.000 production
x 0.09 percent remaining for the rest of the world
540.000 left over for the rest of the world

So.... my own family sucks down a pound/week or more. That's 50lbs/year at a minimum. I suppose there are, say, MILLIONS of families like mine so we use about 50 million pounds annually for the pot in the kitchen. Try to imagine how much coffee Americans drink - then add in the Canadians, UK and all of Europe...

There is just no way to explain how every grocery store and coffee shop in America is selling JBM all year long, year in and year out. I wouldn't believe coffee sold as JBM, blend or otherwise, included beans from a certain Jamaican hillside unless I personally knew the grower. Next closest scam is Kona. With annual yield estimated from 3-6m pounds I cannot figure how it is sold by everyone, all over the world, 365-days a year.

So, back to the OP - where to get real JBM. If Uncle Beanz himself told me he went to Jamaica, saw the crop harvested and bagged, marked his bags and shipped them back to NJ.... I would believe him. Nobody else. Caveat emptor on this crap. It's too easy to take $3.00 Guatamalan beans and put 70-lbs of them in $1.00 burlap bags stenciled "JBM" suddenly have $30 beans.

Very very rare if ever have I seen 100% JBM coffee on the shelf at a store. Virtually everything is a blend.

Haitian Blue Mountain is a good alternative to JBM. I don't think it is as good as JBM but it is very good coffee and the price is fantastic.

Rocketfuelcoffee.com sells real JBM and Kopi Luwak. I do not want to get slapped or banned because I own the company but you asked and I am drinking the JBM and I am a member here. You will love it. And the Kopi Luwak is 100% genuine.

I'm not making it up about Japan importing most of the JBM in the world, i swear.

I pasted a link and apparently, I was off 5%...This site claims 85% goes to Japan, although I have read higher numbers.

http://www.tastesoftheworld.net/jama...et-coffee.html

I never buy the stuff personally. I'm way to happy paying 5-6 bucks a pound for green beans from mostly SA.

I buy green beans also, i drink too much coffee to buy it roasted.
Now if the JBM was green, i would be a buyer.

Get your credit card out, here it is in green.....
http://store.unclebeanz.com/merchant...gory_Code=GRTP

If Norman is selling it as Mavis Banks Green, it is.

Re: Legit real Jamaica Blue Mountain

It is Mavis Banks, Grade 1. We only have 3 pounds left for home roasters.

We sold Kopi Luwak privately to a group of home roasters and for a short time in roasted form.
We had all certs from handlers, etc for traceability reasons.
There are differences in this coffeee I won't go into here.
Good luck on your searches.

I'm wlling to do a split Xman.
I'm new to roasting (haven't even invested in one) but I have an airproof Jar that I can store the beans in until i get the proper equipment. We're talking 15.00 each including shipping right?

How much coffee will that yield?

I suppose that depends on how you brew. A full pot, 32 oz. French Press takes 1.8 oz of coffee. So... About 16 cups?

It also depends how strong you like your coffee.
When i try a new bean i shoot for a medium brew the 1st time,
then i go from there.

pektel 02-07-2011 11:13 AM

Re: Legit real Jamaica Blue Mountain

True. I think there are a number of variables that would affect how much brewed coffee you will end up with.

Re: Legit real Jamaica Blue Mountain

about 1/3 of the coffee I roast goes to waste.

I can't ever grind exactly enough to perfectly fill the portafilter and refuse to leave ground beans for later.

Sad really.....:sh

You use a digital scale? I get the perfect amount of coffee every time.

Nope. I just turn the grinder on for a few seconds, wait for one of the vanes to fill with grinds, thwack a few times intil I get a mound in the portafilter, then sweep across to level it out.

From there, the tamp is the final stage.

I notice about 1/3 of a dose in the sink from my leveling.

Maybe the timer on the Mazzer is a good thing, but I have a Macap and there's no timer. Probably an even trade as the Mazzer leaves more in the bottom than the Macap anyway.

I don't stress about the little bit of waste, but would probably be bummed if someone weighed it all year and showed me what I throw away.

I've had real jbm coffee several times from reputable sources in NYC at a high cost, however whatever my local stop and shops jbm blend is tastes pretty good. No where near the same taste but still a certain similar smoothness to it.

Never blown away by JBM or Kona. They are mild and smooth and good, but not for me. I like full flavored coffee.
