Seasonal Beers

With the leaves changing and a chill in the air we are coming up upon my favorite time season of the year...Beer Season, or more specifically, the seasonal beer season.
I've been drinking pumpkin ales reciently mostly Buffalo Bills and Jacks, which happens to be a pretty good offering from AB. The Harvest Moon ale really didn't do anything for me, and the Dogfish Head Punkin' Ale was to much like drinking the juice from and actually pumpkin rather than a beer with spices.
I can't wait for the Winter and Xmas beers to start showing up on the shelves and on tap; St. Nikolas Bock, Great Lakes Xmas, Goose Island, the Sam Adams sampler (except for that god awful lambic they always put in there) and then the Imperil Stouts. :dr

Re: Seasonal Beers

I'll tell you this, my favorite holiday beers are the Anchor Merry Christmas and happy new year ale and the best is the Old Fezziweg Ale found in the Sam Adams seasonal sampler.

Re: Seasonal Beers

If you want a pumpkin beer that tastes like pumpkin pie spices. Weyerbacher imperial pumpkin and Southern Tier Pumpking fit that bill quite nicely, both are quite high in abv. though 9-10%.

One of my favorite micro-breweries is in Estes Park, CO. In the fall and winter they would do a raspberry-porter :dr, they just mix their raspberry wheat and their porter.

Re: Seasonal Beers

Definitely looking forward to the winter ales!
Currently I am enjoying the Goose Island Harvest Ale. Goes great with the cooler months of Fall.

Blue Moon's is pretty good. Ichabod is one of my favorites this season. Another very good one is Flying Dog's Dogtoberfest.

Of all the Pumkins i've had so far this year the Dogfish Head has been my favorite with the Blue Moon not far behind.

Re: Seasonal Beers

I wait all year for October to roll around for Pumpkin beer season.

Post Road has been my favorite for years, but this year it's #2.
Buffalo Bill's is darn good, I put it at #1, but just barely.
Saranac is #3, and Smuttynose lags behind at #4.

I'm not a fan of Dogfish Head and Blue Moon Pumpkin, not spicy enough. Same reason I put Smuttynose at #4. Seems you get spiced beer, or pumpkin flavored beer, I'm partial to the spiced style.

Then in Feb the local microbrewery makes 'Naked Fish', a chocolate raspberry stout. Some people look forward to Valentine's Day, I look forward to 'Naked Fish' day :D

One of my favorites was the 06 Blue Moon Winter Ale. I remember last winter I was excited when I saw it on the shelves and bought it. To my surprise they changed the beer, the 07 wasn't as good as the 06 winter ale.

I hope they bring it back this winter.

Re: Seasonal Beers

Octoberfest by Samuel Adams is still around. Go get some before they sell out. :dr:dr:dr My favorite beer anytime of the year.

From the Samuel Adams website:

"The first thing you notice when pouring a glass of this seasonal beer is the color. Samuel AdamsŪ Octoberfest has a rich, deep golden amber hue which itself is reflective of the season. Samuel AdamsŪ Octoberfest is a malt lover's dream, masterfully blending together four roasts of barley to create a delicious harmony of sweet flavors including caramel and toffee. The beer is kept from being overly sweet by the elegant bitterness imparted by the German Noble hops. Samuel AdamsŪ Octoberfest provides a wonderful transition from the lighter beers of summer to the winter's heartier brews."

I picked up a couple cases of Sam Adams Octoberfest and Dogfish Pumpkin as they have been my two favorites this year and want to keep some around post-season.

Man, I wish we could get Dogfish Head out here in Oklahoma. I've had to settle lately for things like the Reverend, Salvation, and Hog Heaven Barleywine from Avery... ;)

I'm really diggin the GLBC Nosferatu. Nice sweet malt background with a punch in the face from the hops.

Mmmmm...

I really wasn't a fan of the Nosferatu when I tried it last year it was very flavorful just not they way I like it.

Depends how fast it turns over I guess. I was at a bar last Tuesday and they said they kicked the last of the Oktoberfest a few days prior, but they had the Winter Ale on tap.

Brooklyn Black Chocolate stout may not be the best Imperial Stout out there, but weak and tasteless it isn't. Possibly you got a fake from Miami :hm :r.

Definitely give the Winter Lager a whirl. It is amazing beer.

Spaten Octoberfest. The beer is light in taste with a touch of hops and wheat. It taste better when it is cold (like every beer) and does not feel heavy.

Noticed Great Lakes Christmas Ale has began to hit Columbus stores. When I lived in the Cleveland area last year at this time the entire area was sold out a couple of weeks before Christmas. Good stuff if you can get it!

Jack,
GL Xmas Ale was released 2 weeks ago. I bought a 6 pack. This years brew is very hearty on the "ginger" not too much sweetness of the honey[damn bees]. Also the price went up $1 a 6pk to 10.99

My wife noticed Blue Moon's fall or winter offering in the store last week, called Full Moon

Anyone try this one, and willing to put up a review??

I'm wondering if by Full, they mean full of hops?

Delirium Noel is an outstanding beer. I've had it multiple times now. I really enjoy it. I prefer Delirium Nocturnum, but the Noel is also outstanding.
