Buried cigars?

I live on a slab with no air conditioning. That means that the temps in my house in the summer are not good for storing cigars. Today, I came up with a great (but possibly crazy) idea that I wanted to run past y'all.

I'm thinking about digging a four foot deep hole and inserting an 8" diameter PVC pipe. I would then hang a travel caddy humidor inside the pipe at the depth needed to acheive 68-70 degrees. The top of the pipe would be capped and locked!

Does this seem totally crazy or like a fun and functional weekend project?

The cigars would only spend the hot summer months in the pipe. The others, they would spend in my house at 70*+-.

I need some encouragement/help to move forward.

I'm gonna say that's kinda crazy. For someone whose name is MajorCaptSilly to say it's crazy, it's pretty crazy. I say buy a cooler and put it in the coolest part of your house. It will insulate the contents from much of the heat on the outside and will also help regulate humidity. Remember, it only gets dangerous if the temp of your humidor gets above 80 degrees. I would also recommend freezing your cigars to kill off any beetles.

I would love to encourage you, but it seems like a helluva lotta work to store a small amount of cigars. If youre gonna be storing less than a dozen cigars, I dont really think you have to worry about the temps. Freezing can help any beetle concerns, and if youre storing a lot more cigars you may want to consider a Vinotemp type unit.

If you search Freezing or Vinotemp here Im sure youll find a ton of info on it.

Hmmm, 12 posts which means your new here. If you plan on sticking around and following through with your plan I say make the hole 8ft wide not 8". We are a bad influence and soon your collection will outgrow an 8" hole.:r
To stay on topic, I think your plan is pretty drastic. May want to do a search for Vino. May be a more practical solution.

If you are just talking about a small amount of cigars, like the amount you can fit into a caddy, I say just smoke them. They'll be fine.

Does anyone remember the guy at the other site who wanted to test the long term effects of aging, and wanted to bury a cooler in his yard filled with cigars and a hose running to the surface for fresh air?

Burying them seems somewhat drastic. I would go with a vino if the funds permit, if they don't I would explore other options first.

I don't know if this would work, if it's a small enough number why not go with a small tupperware in the fridge with beads?

Would there be dynamite involved? Your plan would be really cool with some dynamite to create the hole.

Or a Vino. But that's nowhere near as awe-inspiring.

Bury 'em. Bury 'em all, I say. That would be the coolest thing ever...well, except for that thing MajorCaptSilly did once.

I'm Still Interested in the concept! Wouldn't want to go to too much trouble or ruin any good cigars, though.:)

Well, I do want to bury more than 10. I've quickly found out that I can save some money buying samplers. So, I would be storing 20-40 (probably).

If I do it, I'll be sure to post pictures. That's for sure!

The biggest concern I see is seepage from ground water... in Indiana, typically they say groundwater is about 30" below surface (also freeze line). You have to seriously consider the issues there.... but other than that, from a guy thats spent lots of time in large sewer pipe, your smoke will love the cool ;)

Water tight is not a problem. Solvent glued will take care of that.
The structure of choice has yet to be determined. I will work on it this Thursday.

Let me know if you have any suggestions!

Sounds a little drastic brotha... why don't you check craigslist, and a couple
of other sites.... It's been 90+ The whole damn summer down here and
all of my cigars are fine! You can even use an old beverage/dorm style
refrigerator (leave it unplugged and get you some humidity beads and be well
on your way!

It sounds as though you're an engineer of sorts, and this is something you're
bent on doing so good luck my friend!:tu
