Game of Thrones

Anyone else as simultaneously excited and worried about this? The books are incredible, very dark, bloody as hell and I just can't seem to put them down. I just hope they will at least try to do the first book justice.

Man, I hope they get the show right. I picked up the first book in the series when I heard about the tv show. I blasted through all the books in the series, can't wait till the new book comes out.

I love that they finally have some videos available now. Looks good so far. My wife and I cancelled HBO last year but might have to pick it back up again in 2011.

I've started the first book, but never finished it. Looks like I won't be able to see it if it's only on HBO...

i just wish he'd write the books faster. i've been waiting for the next one (A Dance with Dragons) for like 5 years now. ugh.

anyway, my thoughts on the show are positive. I've never really disliked the quality of an HBO show, so I think it will be good.

5 Years between books....that's reason enough not to start reading them.

The first book drags a little in the beginning, mostly because he seems to be setting everything up for the rest of the series. If you can get half way through the first book the last half is outstanding and will make you want to keep reading.

My wife is really enjoying not paying for HBO now (more shoes for her) so I know it's going to be tough to get her to sign up again. I'm going to have to pick my battles here. I've been debating whether to pick up the NHL package or wait and see if I can get her to subscribe to HBO again.

I also started the first book and lost interest about half way through.
Might pick it up again, we'll see.

It got interesting for a little while, but once school started I couldn't read anymore and lost interest.

Re: Game of Thrones

From the behind the scenes stuff on You Tube from HBO it looks like the series will be dead on. There are even interviews with George R.R. Martin talking about everything.
The lines are spot on from what you catch of them at times.

Like many of the Sci Fi series, I lost interest waiting for the next book to come out. This is one of several series that I started and no longer remember which books I have and haven't read. The books were good and I want to get back to the series at some point in future. Now where is that last WoT book?

Re: Game of Thrones

Hopefully he will get this next book done, and it will be the end. I hate when they go on and on and keep adding books. Wheel of Time just got terrible so much so that it ruined the first four books(that were actually good)

Patience and Netflix go a long way. ;)

Yeah, I gave up on reading any series books. Had it happen too many times where the last book never comes out and you're just left hanging.

There are two more planned after this next one coming out. This next one will only focus on the Northern characters, as Feast for Crows focused on the Southern characters, however it sounds like the characters across the sea will be in both. All I'm hoping for is that he doesn't take 5 years to release the next book like he did the previous two...

As far as the series, I'm really excited for it and only minimally worried (as much as anybody should be for a book to tv or movie transfer).

With each preview however I'm more and more satisfied that HBO will do this series right. I just finished the fourth book Friday and I'm VERY much so looking forward to see this.

Also can't wait for July 12th and the next book :tu

Don't know if I will like it as the preview didn't really capture my imagination. Will watch the first ep to see if its any good.

I have never read the books. I just saw the preview because I have free HBO for weekend. I thought it looked pretty good, might even have to order the channel because of that and other shows. We'll see, definetly going to watch Sunday.

I love the books. I was a little worried about this aswell because whenever I read a book then see a movie or show based on it I am usualy let down.

But I have watched the making of videos that have been made and the fact that the writer is pretty involved I have high hopes. I can't wait for this to start.

The Sword of Truth series is completed and finished. It is darn good and pretty epic. They attempted a series of that set of novels as well but it failed as it strayed WAY off course from the books and alienated the entire fan base.

I've never understood that with producers. You have an automatic fan base built right in to any series. Why stray and so far away from the source material where the characters have the same names and that's about it? I mean if the books are so good that it developed a fan base why not attempt to be faithful to the story and attract more fans while not losing the original fans?

This doesn't seem to be the case with Game of Thrones. George R.R. Martin appears to have been very involved with the series and in the small making of segments they've had exact lines lifted from the novels in some inconsequential scenes. It appears to be very faithful to the source material.

This is exactly what happened to Robert Jordan and Wheel of Time for the middle chunk of the series, unfortunately when he realized he was dying and started to get the series back on track a) a lot of fans had already moved on and b) he didn't live long enough to finish the series.

Luckily Brandon Sanderson is a great writer and seamlessly finished the book Jordan was halfway through and has done a great job finishing up the series so far. One more book and I'll finally finish this decade long love affair (completely with ups and downs), haha.

I agree that Martin seems to have stayed true to the original story and has done a GREAT job telling to story...I just wish he could've released more than 4 books in a 15 year period :( Doesn't give me much hope that he'll finish the 7 book series by 2020, lol

I meant that they tried a TV series, it was called The Legend of the Seeker.
It lasted two seasons as it got so far off track from the books that it was just way different.

I honestly think it was well done. But as someone who hasn't read the books, I wish they could have explained the overview of the kingdom just a bit, maybe through narration.

I am a big SoT fan. The show was entertaining from a TV aspect, from someone who read the series, the show was complete and utter drivel. I had to tell myself that this was purely for entertainment and in no way was trying to emulate the books, otherwise I would get angry.

Brutus2600 04-18-2011 08:58 AM

Re: Game of Thrones

Watched the premier last night and within the first 2 minutes I was so excited how closely they were sticking to the book and how well they translated those scenes into the show. I do agree though that there is some basic background that's covered in the book during the scenes that if I was watching it for the first time I would've been a little lost, but having read the series it was almost like going back and reading it again it was so well done.

So not to spoil any of it for people who haven't seen it or read the books, but so far I'm VERY impressed with the recreation of the scenes, every actor and actress matches their character in the book insanely well, and of course thank you HBO for making a great show with graphic nudity and violence. If they had taken that out it wouldn't have felt like the same story!

How can someone who has never read the books get into what's going on? Is just diving in and letting it happen going to be sufficient enough to get up to speed on the story?

First episode was pretty good. I highly doubt I will ever read the books, so this series will be my one and only reference to them.

To everyone who knows the books, please be careful with the spoilers as the tv series unfolds...(not that you guys aren't, just wanted to reiterate that there are plenty of us out here who haven't and won't read the books)

This. I could not believe that crap! Killing the poor wolf and not even the one who bit the prince! And then they kill the butchers son!! Not cool.

Lesson learned: Never screw with a prince, period. It's never going to end well.

Well that's not good news. I guess every show needs some type of villain. :sh

I can only imagine the detail in the books. ;)

The detail of the books is astoundingly vivid and rich!
I believe there are only seven books planned of the series with the fifth coming out this July.
