What kind of Whiskey? Scotch Whiskey? If you want to learn about Scotch check out Kayakers thread about Scotch Q&A. As far as traditional Whiskey and Cognac goes, no clue.

If i were you Id start getting those little samplers and start in with those if they have them available. Taste is something that is very subjective,,what one likes another can't stand. One thing I stopped doing was taking somebody elses review on anything regardless if it was a cigar ( unless they like the same cigar profiles I like ) and the same with alcohol ( unless again, they like the same type of alcohol I do ) Some whiskey along with cognac requires a history of trying these types of alcohol in the past. To just jump in will probably sour you on their strength or flavor profile. I remember when I first tried Drambuie,,,thought this stuff was horrible. After a year or two of trying different spirits I came back and loved it. Moral of the story is to try different brands and see what you like before you invest in a full bottle,,,some of them can be very expensive. If you have a lot of disposable income ignore this last part of the post.
