I did too. That's a bummer. He was one of the greatest ever and a ceaseless ambassador for the sport of hockey. RIP, Gordie.

Somme of my best childhood memories are of watching Hockey Night in Canada and hearing the the announcer yell, "Howe's got the puck!" because often times you then witnessed magic.

Rest in peace, Mr Hockey. You will not be forgotten.

I'm just learning Hockey, my 10 yr old has been in it for a couple years. What a great sport. I always heard about Bobby Orr, because all my relatives were from MA.

Anyway - sorry to lose Gordie Howe. A legend and from an era of sports that had a different aura about it and great guys.

The Red Wings held a public memorial service at Joe Louis Arena. They estimate nearly 50,000 people came to pay their respects. The loss of Gordie Howe was quite the talk of the town. I heard one fan say something that stuck with me. He said that if you ask 25 stars (not fans) of each professional sport, who was the greatest, you'd get very different answers. In the NFL you'd get a dozen answers. In MLB you'd get even more. In the NBA, debates would circle around 4-5 names. But, in hockey, even the man who broke his scoring records would say Gordie Howe was the best.
