How Do You Volunteer in Your Community...

Each season, I volunteer my time as an Assistant Referee (AR) for AYSO (American Youth Soccer Organization) here in the Santa Clarita Valley. Each Saturday I'm generally signed-up to AR 3 to 4 U12 Girls and/or Boys soccer games. Its a great pleasure to be part of this volunteer organization and to know that what you do gives boys and girls the opportunity to develop their mental and physical skills in this game, and of course, to have lots of fun each Saturday.

So, how do you volunteer in your community?:ss

various health fairs through the pharmacy school

Nothing structured, really, but I do spend a healthy amount of time helping out at my wifes (third grade teacher) school for functions, plays, the student "opera" and fundraisers.

I've coached childrens'/youth baseball, basketball and soccer, ironically probably doing my best job at soccer. I played a year in high school but was no good at it, so go figure. We'll probably go undefeated this year. Soccer kind of grows on you.

I'm also active in Rotary, am on my county GOP committee, and serve as vice chair of a state juvenile justice board and may serve on a similar DOJ board soon.

Looking this over, it is apparent that I need to spend more time at my paying job. Maybe I'd have a bit more dough...

Edit: I also seem to be serving as a chaperon a lot over the past few years for various school outings. My theory is that people assume that self-employed people have vast amounts of free time on their hands.

I am an Explorer with Explorer Post 1218. It is a volunteer organization through the Frederick County Sheriff's Office. Throughout the year between meetings we constantly are volunteering our man power to help out different local organizations with pretty much anything they request. Usually we are assisting the Kiawanas org. when they do things such as fishing derbys for children, we wrap gifts at the mall during holiday season, we do traffic details for RedCross motorcycle rallies.... and a bunch of other fun law enforcement related stuff

Let's see.....

Umpire for the local Little league, I used to coach. Next week I'm running the kitchen for a local school carnival. I help out with some local groups that beautify the community. I do a lot of fundraiser events. For some reason, I'm always asked to do food for local events. Trying to get my kids more interested in volunteering.

I get more out of it than the kids do, Mark, the looks on their faces when you take them on "field trips" makes the time worth it times 100. :)
