Douwe Egberts

Any of you coffee gurus heard of or tasted Douwe Egberts?

I discovered it a few weeks ago and fell in love with it.

One of the biggest names in coffee in Europe... make instants to the same quality as the likes of Nescafe, and the ground coffee isn't too shabby. Personally, I'll drink the instant over the equivalent Nescafe product.

one of the biggest brands here Peter, their factory is in the city of Utrecht, approx 30 miles east of Amsterdam. My dad loves this stuff. I'm not a coffee drinker, so I can't tell you if it's any good.

Thanks Peter. I have a few things in my cart now. Which blend did you buy and fall in love with?

I can't answer for Peter, but here in the UK, I drink the dark roast... which I will assume is at the very least, comparable to the Intense blend in the US... it's nice and smoky!

I discovered the coffee at a cafe inside a local casino. All I was told was that it was Douwe Egberts. I would have to guess it is the medium roast (red). When I found my source online, I ordered the Medium Roast (red) and the dark roast (Intense). I only received it a few days ago and have only opened the dark roast. I love it.

Don't know if you guys know Senseo in the USA, but that is an invention from Philips and Douwe Egberts.

When I was in Germany for the World Cup in 2006, we spent a couple of days in The Netherlands and stayed in Utrecht. Loved Utrecht & Amsterdam and would love to return one day.

According to Wikipedia, Douwe Egberts is properly known as "Douwe Egberts Koninklijke Tabaksfabriek-Koffiebranderijen-Theehandel NV". I'll let the OranjeConnection translate if needed, but I feel Dutch and English are similar enough to pick out the important words...

Douwe Egberts Royal tobaccofactory, coffeeroaster, tea trading inc.

I knew they were involved with RYO tobacco under the name Drum, but the pipe tobacco connection is new. When Douwe Egberts got bought by Sara Lee, the tobacco part was sold to Imperial Tobacco.

I suppose back when they was still a Dutch East Indies, all companies would make all types of tobacco, coffee and tea, owning land that would be good for growing all three... just a bit of speculation, mind.

I'll keep my eyes open for some. I like most things Dutch so the coffee will probably agree with me.

Are you buying it whole bean, Peter?

Yes but only in very few places. The Iowa Meat Frms market near where I work carries it.

They only have ground, I believe.
