Agree on the corn cob pipe, cheap and they smoke well. As for tobacco, I'd go to your local tobaccoist and try out their bulk pipe tobaccos. You can get a little of several kinds and try them out. My old tobaccoist in NC used to let me try half a bowl of anything I wanted to free.

I would also suggest a cob as your first pipe. My local shop also lets me smoke a bowl of any bulk they have on hand, so if you have a local shop I would start there. Have fun, becasue before you know it you will be sliding down another slippery slope.:tu

I'll chime in with the cobs as well. If your heart is set on a briar though you can try your tobacconist (become a regular - it will do you both a world of good!). Sometimes they'll have estate (used & cleaned) briars for reasonable prices. If you're the DIY type cruise the antique shops and flea markets looking for inexpensive (but not cracked) briars and clean them up yourself. There are some good tips on cleaning pipes here on CA.

But again, a cheap cob will get you started.

As for baccy these guys covered the bases already. Prince Albert burns very reliably and pretty much bite free - good for learning. Your local tobacconist will likely have many house blends to try as well.

Happy piping! :)

Oh, and check out the NST for pipes. Another place to get a good variety of blends to try. :tu

I would recommend a Missouri Meerschaum cob (in my still very new, very humble opinion.)

The Country Gentleman is a great smoker, feels very refined for a cob.

Enjoy the ride!

I have to agree with the consensus. Pipe isn't for everyone. I find it nice as an occasional diversion. So, start with the cob. It's a cheap way to find out if you might want to explore further.

Re: Wanting to try a pipe

ordered three of the Missouri Meerschaum cobs this morning. Along with 4 different tobaccos. i also order pipe cleaner (three bundles) and pipe tools. Along with filters, but i didn't realize pipes used filters? I may of not needed those i don't know. But they were like $.60 cents...LOL so i figured i would go ahead and get them with the order.

Thanks guys for the help will take a pic when i get it all in...

Re: Wanting to try a pipe

Most people poke out the filter and dont use them. They make the pipe gargle and catch moisture.

Dr. Grabow.

PS: I guess I'm the only person here who despises how cobs smoke, but moot point now.

I'm with the other guys on the cob pipes. You can get your feet wet without shelling out a bunch of clams. Your local B&M can set you up with a small sampler. Out of there bulk. That way you can try all of the flavors of the rainbow. For not much.

Re: Wanting to try a pipe

Congrats on the pipes!

MM Cobbs come with a filter, but I'm of the opinion that filters are useless. You should smoke a bowl with one in, and smoke one without it to find out which you enjoy better!

I don't think Andrew would appreciate me roasting him. Plus, he's way too lean, would dry out too quickly.
