Thanks Unclebeanz!!

I ordered 2 days ago 4 pounds of The One and Only Negrita, Norm's best selling blends and one of my personal favorites.

Within a few minutes, a conformation came and within an hour, tracking.

Today, the package arrived and seemed larger than 4 pounds.

Alas, Norm included a sample of 1 pound of Ethiopian Natural Sidamo, which is headed for the roaster.

Aside from Unclebeanz's quality and service, it is not unusual to find extras like cigars and samples of beans which is one of the reasons they are on the top of my list.:tu

Good to hear you received your order so quickly. USPS is slower than usual this year in some parts of the US. We are simply hoping that when we track our orders before family time tonight, we only see the word "Delivered" with no exceptions.

General question that might be beneficial to ask publically.

Is there a standard for roasting Ethiopian beans in regards to darker or lighter?

I have read comments on other forums where roasters say they had to "coax" the flavors out of Ethiopian beans for great success.

I ask this before I roast the sample Uncle sent.

No standard, Pete. The process is roast to approaching second crack and stop. Cup in one day. Take it slightly darker the next roast. Cup in one day. Cup the first roast again. Note changes. Repeat. I can't say everything here, but this is our basic approach. Somewhere in this process you find Nirvana. Then you dial it in.

Some Yirgs are tea like. Some Yirgs just need to go closer to second crack. Some need to be at the lighter side of the dark because then you get it all. It comes down to what you like. Hope this makes sense.

And make sure your brewing equipment is squeaky clean. And rinsed.

Im sure its just this time of year, and of course out of your control.

Pete/Novasurf,
With my taste being for strong, rich, Cuban blend espresso, I was thinking the Mano Negra is the one for me.
Thoughts?

Also,
Novasurf, can you fill us in on the Puerto Rican one you say you will soon have?

Re: Thanks Unclebeanz!!

Try all three. Beso. Mano. PR Mountain.

Spoke to Norman and figured it out.
Ordering some Beso for myself and son to try it out.

I've had Yirga roasted where you can taste lemon notes and completely differently the next time, so I guess it's not a beginner's bean for home roasting perhaps. The best tasting roasts have been from others roasting it.

I tend to like Yirgas lighter than the South American and Island blends which I drink dark, past second crack.

Never thought to cup in one day and will follow your suggested method. Thanks!

I just placed my first order, and picked up an air popcorn popper from the thrift store on the way home. You guys got me all interested in this home roasting thing, and I can't wait to try it.
