Re: Tattoos?

Got my newest tattoo today. I think it turned out really good. The color on the legs will tone down to look more like a tan when it heals. Gonna put a Koi on the other side of my forearm. And a Japanese fan around the outside of her head. Trying to stay with a Japanese type theme for my left arm.

I've got a few, all have something relevant to my career choice.

I would say if you get one make sure its something that got some meaning to it and not something randomly picked. They also can be addictive!!!

Re: Anyone have any Tattoo's

I have/had 2. I've got the UV flames on my left forearm, and I've still got "Fidelitas" on my right wrist, but as it's my saluting arm, I was instructed to get it removed if I ever wanted a future with the Marines. It sucks, as I'm quite attached (Haha, punny). My mom agreed to get it for me 2 Christmases ago, and she even went with me, and watched (I was so proud of her) so I really like it. I've still got the original sketch from when I drew it up, so I'll probably have it re-done somewhere else. Anyways, here's the tattoos.

Lights off, UV on.

And here's the one in the process of removal. It's been about a week since my first of 5-6 sessions.

I have quite a few. I have a personal rule about not going below the watch line or above the collar line so I can dress up and be "respectable" when I need to be, but other than that, it's pretty much fair game for me.

A few really mean something to me, and a few were just for fun, but all of them tell a personal story and where I was in my life when I got it done.

Enjoy it, you only get one first! :ss

Best advice I can give, If you do not plan on getting more than just one tat, then don't get any at all. they are addicting.

Research shops and artists

Do not get anyone's name unless they are:

#1. Your kids
#2. Dead

Have the artist draw a completely original piece just for you OR at the very least, choose something that will be rare and unique and truly "art".

Here are a few of mine:

Re: Anyone have any Tattoos

Excellent! The ribs are a good place to start because they definitely give you a good idea of the pain level of tats. After getting that done you'll have no probs getting them in other places :)

Good job my friend.

Then Lucky's advice is perfect. If you choose a location that is easily covered by clothing, you should be fine. Make sure the tattoo means something to you, research your artists to find a talented one, and you shouldn't ever need it removed. I was taking a risk by getting mine on my wrist, and I knew that. Part of me is actually happy that I get to experience something that most don't ever go through. I don't regret the tattoo, or that it has to be removed, and I do intend to get it re-done somewhere else. But the most valuable advice I've seen in this thread is that if you only want one, don't get it. I don't know anybody who has only one tattoo and doesn't want anymore. It is absolutely the most addictive thing I've ever experienced, and most people with tattoos will tell you the same thing.

Who's the artist? I'm taking my little sister to get her first tattoo for her 18th birthday next October, and I'll be getting my next. We're going to Slave to the Needle in Seattle. Aaron Bell is definitely one of the most talented artists I've ever seen. (http://slavetotheneedle.com/tattoos/aaron-bio.asp)

Re: Anyone have any Tattoos

OK, so it's just me then?

I'll be the voice of reason. I got a tat when I was 17, 1972. I was stoned...not just then, but all the time. My buddy and I went to the shop. He got a zig-zag man, I got a mj flower top. I have regretted it for about 30 years.

First, lifestyle changes. The values you have now, when expressed permanently and visually, may be vastly different than 5, 10 or 20 years down the road.

Second, after about 10 years they look like sh*t. after 20 years they look like mostly grey and black blobs. Yeah, I know you can get 'em touched up...blah, blah, blah.

Third, when you start advancing in your career, and the vast majority of people do, they are not and advertisement for "stability" or "good decision maker". Furthermore, they do not give you the look that screams "hire me" unless you're trying to get a job as a bouncer or a roadie. They look, well...stooooopid.

Go ahead, let the flogging begin, it's just my personal opinion and advice.

LasciviousXXX 11-17-2008 01:37 PM

Re: Anyone have any Tattoos

Yeah its just you then :)

1st lifestyle changes, get something that means something to you when you get it. I look at tattoos as sign-posts for where I've been in my life and what's been important to me, that way no matter what I get I have no regrets as it meant something to me at that point in my life.

2nd, my wife has tattoos more than 20 years old and they look just fine. Go to a good reputable artist who uses quality ink and don't go drunk or stoned.
http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o.../echo1-1-1.jpg

3rd, I wear a shirt and tie to work and have full sleeves. Whenever I'm not at work I go with short sleeves all the time but in the business professional world there's aboslutely no reason that you can't have tattoos.

So I definitely respect your reasoning for you regretting your tats but I will respectfully disagree with all of your points. I don't believe tattoos look stupid at all. I think that if you get quality tattoos it will look just that... high quality.

Get tattoos that are high quality by a professional artist, don't go stoned or drunk, make a logical informed decision and have it be something with meaning and you'll never regret your tattoos.

I agree 100% I have one that is 21 years old and looks almost as good as the day I got it. Both :) done stone cold sober, can be covered as I work in the "business" world, and have personal meaning to me. Would have more, but teh need for them to be "personal" keeps me from the frivolous ones. Right now I am looking for a local artist that can do portrait of my parents...

Re: Anyone have any Tattoos

I love portrait work!

I definitely agree, and its good to keep in mind that the quality of tattoo ink has changed drastically since 30 years ago. While Back in the day the quality of the ink was sketchy and looks bad after a bit, current tattoo ink is exceptional quality and looks very fresh and vibrant even after many years. I have to say that in my experience KuroSumi and Starbrite inks are the best and brightest with SkinCandy running a close third.

I totally agree. Now Im not that old so I dont have any that are 20+ years old. All of my tats mean something to me. Also if you were to pass me on the street you would have no idea i have any tattoos. If you work, you have to think about the placement. (If you cant easily cover them with longsleeves) I dont think tattoos are stupid at all. Its personal..... it tells your story!

It's one of 18 UV reactive colors. The others all actually have a color to them, that when healed, simply looks like a faded, or slightly pastel color. but under UV they pop. The one he used for mine is a "white" ink, but truly it's colorless. The only thing you see on my arm is scar tissue, and with most people you can't even see that, but my dad's Cuban, and so I tan and show scars easier than most.

I've already got one planned for if/when I get into the Marines, but not a day sooner lol. I don't have any NAVY ideas, but figure out what you want to get, and mull it over for a month or 3. I have three tats. One on each leg and one on my back. Most of the time I forget that I have them. They are small and you can't really see them unless I have a swimsuit on. My first one is 12 years old and it still looks great. When I got my first one I said that was it and since I have gotten two more. My advice is make sure it is something that you can live with the rest of your life.

the inks that are used today are completely different than back in the day. major advancement in the ink field.

never get a tattoo when your drunk.

never get a tattoo you just thought up. (i thought aboot my sleeve for 10 years before i went for it. i made sure it was something i wanted. there are alot of tattoos that i wanted back in the day that i would kill myself if i had them on me now!!). think about it,think about it and think about it..

your tattoo should look the way it did from day one if:

your artists is good. do research on your artist. check all of his work. most importantly, find a tattoo on someone that he did years ago. see how it looks now.

if you take care of your tattoo for the week following when it got done. use A&D ointment. IMO, don't use any of that crap goo they try to sell you at some tattoo shops. it's crap. it may work a bit but every tat artists i know uses A&D on themselves. i have used it on all of my tatts, i have some that are 6 years old that look like i got them done yesterday.

skin care for life!! sun ruins tattoos. use sunblock always when you are in the sun (on the tatto). i use SP 50 if i go to the beach. it will leave any skin you put it on white, but your tatto will look good.

;)

the times are also different now. tattoos aren't as looked down apon as they were even ten years ago. i have seen CEO's of major companies with full sleeves and all. you should make sure you can cover it up when need be though. example = work. don't put tattoos on your face, neck or hands. i have a sleeve but it can be fully covered with a suit and a nice watch. you would never know i had them unless i showed you.
even though they are excepted more, in a real business setting, they should be covered. you can enjoy them the moment you get off.

but in the world in general today, tattoos are more excepted for sure.

my :2

oh and GO BIG! lol.

I freakin' LIVE in sunscreen as well. Neutrogena makes an SPF 85 that is awesome. Goes on well and doesn't leave you with that white-out look. It doesn't matter where I go I'm always lathered up. Great piece of advice, use sunscreeen on tattoos that will see a lot of sun exposure.

I should buy stock in SPF companies LOL

And I know that for the Marines, the newest policy is that it has to be smaller than your hand. I'll wait until I'm in to get any more, and even then I'll be sure it's perfectly acceptable before.
