Flavours you don't like in a cigar?

I smoked an AF Hemingway something or other (it was part of a massive sampler buy) on Friday. Great burn, lots of smoke, full bodied, spicy and leathery.. leathery.. hrmm..

I'm still a noob and discovering the flavours I enjoy in cigars, but I think I can put leather on the do-not-like list. The entire time I was smoking, I kept having visions of chewing on a 80's biker jacket. Though there were other flavours, leather was predominant, and spoiled the rest of the cigar flavours for me.

So what about you guys? What flavours don't you like?

Olives....have smoked a couple vintage cigars in Puff-Puff-Passes that had a strong flavor of olives, which I don't care for. I would actually skip those cigars when they came around to me in the P-P-P.

I'm sorry but the way you summed that up left me in tears!

Not everyone enjoys everything and that's quite alright, I myself do not like Candella or lacking a better word for it and "Olde Worlde" Flavor.

Not having tasted it in particular, yet having heard it described many times...

Ass.

And on a more serious note, astringent or metallic tastes turn me off right away. I am not a fan of the whole "chewing on tinfoil" kind of thing.

Tobacco.
I kid I kid.
I don't like it when I get a cigar that taste like smoking an ashtray.
My last Oliva V Torpedo was like that. Left me wondering why people put such high praise to it.

I do not like overly vegetal or grassy tasting cigars. Cigar should have complexity and balanced flavors. Cigars should be well cured and manufactured.

Now grassy is something I enjoy! I smoked a Monte #4 not to long ago, and it was the "burning straw hat" undertone that I loved!

Ditto.

Spicy to me tastes harsh and cheap.

I agree completely. Although still a n00b, maybe my tastes will change. I love the chocolatey, coffee, etc tastes. When a cigar is too peppery it takes away from the experience for me.

Re: Flavours you don't like in a cigar?

Cigars infused with sweet flavors. I'm not talking about the natural sweetness of a maduro wrapper or the sweet coffee or mocha undertones. I'm talking about artificially infusing/flavoring a cigar to make it taste like a particular fruit, libation, candy etc. Such as CAO Flavors, Acid and the list could go on. It's not that I haven't given them a fair shake, I've tried many. I just don't dig them. I also dislike bitter and salty "flavours" (in cigars).

I would describe "straw hat" and "grassy" as being different. Have you smoked a Vegueros? Now that has the grassy flavor I do not enjoy. Grassy should taste like... grass/lawn. The Vegueros is just like a fresh cut lawn. I like the smell of fresh cut lawns, but do not like the taste.

Incense, perfume, cologne, grape, pineapple, watermelon, kuba kuba... er... not to name specifics.

In a real cigar, I tasted buttered broccoli once. I didn't hate it, but I didn't exactly like it.

The flavors I hate tasting in cigars are grassy, vegetal, used ashtray, poop (not kidding, but it was more of aroma than taste), and bitterness.

Tuna Fish... not in a cigar anyway!!!:D

Only in a Tuna Sandwich!!!:r

Seriously, I don't like a flavor I can only describe as Powdered Milk or luggy (snot from a sinus infection in the back of your throat)!!! Yuck!!!:pu

I agree that too much spice just makes the tongue feel too hot and wrecks the smoke. I don't mind a little spice in the flavor though.

Another newb jumping on the too much spice bandwagon.... Also on of the New Macanudo's was gifted to me for my birthday. I smoked it reminded me so much of walking through my parent's dusty hay filled barn. So yeah, guess I'm not into the barnyard/hay-like cigars either.

Had that happen to a box of Partagas 898 Varnished. Had a couple when the box was new - set it aside for like 8 months and then tired another - felt like I had just had my mouth washed out.

Disgusting.

Haven't tried them again - been over a year or so now so.

grass for sure. the best way to describe it is how a sommelier once described the difference between a good and bad sauvigion blanc. If it tastes like fresh cut straw, that is good, hay, not so good. that hay taste is the taste i do not like, Davidoff ncs have it and for that price, i can easily avoid them.

:tpd: I like a little pepper on the tongue, and some spice through the nose, but when a cigar is just a pepper bomb, the smoke is ruined for me.

Pepper. I like spice in my cigars, but not a peppery spice.

Also not a fan of ammonia or whatever the flavor is that makes me say "harsh". I can't put my finger on what that is, like burning grass.

ROFL... I think it depends on who was wearing the Leather jacket back in the 80's!

I'm with those that hate the metal taste, but my biggest turnoff is long walks on the beach, I would rather walk a short distance then lay down (Sorry wrong forum) on occasion I get that Thick gunk on the back of my throat that I try to remove with the back of my tounge... all I can describe it as is very bitter and Ashy.

I'm still looking for a Consistently "Creamy" Cigar.

I am surprised no-one mentioned the horrific peanut taste of the CAO Colombia--the worst cigar ever by CAO by a factor of ten.

Re: Flavours you don't like in a cigar?

Great resurrected thread!!

As a N00b to cigars, but not to pipes, I can say that I do not enjoy bitter, metallic or extreme pepper....I like a little perique in pipe tobacco, so pepper is fine, but not pepper bombs that seem harsh and acrid. I have noticed some bitter aftertastes in some cigars that I have had....not a fan.

Re: Flavours you don't like in a cigar?

Here here, I also commend the resurrection of this tread!
I'm with everyone as far as the obvious foul tastes being bad...but more than that, I find that I sometimes really love a new cigar I've tried, buy a box & overdo it and then get *really* sick of that cigars profile..
the most current offender is the Crowned Heads Le Careme - wonderful cigar, really flavorful maduro, but I got really tired of its taste quickly. So I've relegated that box to the bottom of one of my Coolidors.
I also in general don't like most cigars that have too much of a sweet profile, I'm definitely more in the dry woodsy/earthy/mineraly camp. :tu
