"Breaking" News?

So, a few minutes ago, CBS broke in with live coverage of Rep. Giffords being driven to the airport, apparently complete with a police escort and closed streets along the route. Really?! How is this breaking news?
Please, no political comments. This is just a commentary on the absurdity (is that a word?) of what passes as "breaking" news. Other examples include the live coverage of the hearse carrying Michael Jackson's body to the public funeral; and the JFK Jr. plane crash, when CNN aired footage for hours from "just a few minutes ago" of helicopters searching the LI Sound.
"We now go live to Walter Reed Medical Center, where Rep. Giffords has just had her first solid bowel movement since being shot. Chief Fecologist Dr. Daniel McGuffin will be giving a press conference, complete with Power Point presentation."

Guess its a slow news day. It seems news like 2 Miami PD officers killed in the line of duty or the Soldiers serving overseas DYING everyday dont mean a thing. But Jesse James Marrying Kat VonD is news worthy. Gotta love peoples priorities!!!!!

And I can't help noticing a distinct lack of updates on the other Tucson victims.

Actually, there were 13 people shot that survived, IIRC.

The real problem (and sad fact) is that for a large part of the population -- this really is breaking news...

I just read a very touching story on one of the surviving victims: the woman who had brought the little girl to the rally/meet & greet and her attempts to sheild the little girl from the gunfire as well as how she is getting along with her own injuries both physical and emotional.

Anyway, its a 24 hour news cycle dude. Not like in the past. TV news is competing with twitter, google news, facebook....people aren't going to wait until the 6 o'clock action news anymore.

It's a story that has really caught the attention of the general population and the goal of amy news outlet is to serve their consumers. Besides the obvious political interests this is a human interest thing - she got shot in the head and lived.

I hear ya.

Our local stations send out 432 alerts an hour just in case we might get an inch of snow....

This is Buffalo and its January, anything under a foot on the ground and I get worried.

I watch very little network news for the reasons stated. It seems to be more entertainment than news. I read a daily paper for my news.

Too many stations, too little news. I love the way Fox goes "around the world in 80 seconds." Talk about egocentric! It's wonderful to have options to the bias of the network news programs, but really important stuff does not occur 24/7! And, a lot of really important stuff won't fit nicely into a bubble-headed bleach blondes 60 second sound bite presentation.

Sounds like 'Storm Watch' in SoCal.

I agree not to be an @$$hole, but there has to be something more important then her being driven to the airport.

Re: "Breaking" News?

My favorite is the weather lead-in story for every station in town any time there's precipitation. If it comes down hard, you better have someone standing right in the middle of the rain/snow. These networks love for nothing more than snow/rain between 8-10pm, interrupt the show in progress, and trot out their live doppler radar map 258,000 showing the direction the rain is headed, as if we don't have a pretty good idea what general direction it's going already.
