Heading to San Francisco for work. Bringing the wife with me. Looking for suggestions on nice restaurants or places I should bring her in my down time.

A place to eat on Valentine's Day?

Also, if BART or any other public transportation could get me to Foster City?

Head north up the PCH to Stinson Beach. Eat at the Parkside Cafe. Maybe a lunch, so you can walk on the beach at the nearby National Park. Great ride, great views, great food. Maybe an hour north of San Fran, depending on how often you stop along the coast highway.

Are you staying in the City? The closest BART goes to FC is the Airport. There may be buses from the Airport to FC, check SAMTrans website for bus schedule.

As for places to eat. You are only limited by your budget and the type of food you want to sample. Give us some hints.

Where in sf are you going to be at? I love Shabu house down Geary great for all you can eat, there is a great sushi restaurant across the street from it, I have to ask the gf for the name of it. House of prime rib is always a tourist spot but honestly the times I've been here have been hit or miss on the prime rib, I've stopped going there. On the warf I like scomas for their choppino. You can hit hog island oysters at the ferry building, great happy hour for $1 oysters. Their are a lot of eateries at the ferry building too.

I'm a sucky boyfriend so I have no recommendations for valentines dinner.

Won't have a car, going to do a wine country tour. Staying at the Marriott on Sutter, we like any kind of food. Wife loves Sushi. I would like sour dough pf some kind. Any SF must eat.

I heard Sonoma much better then Napa? Thought about doing the bus tour to Muir and Sonoma unless you guys think we should include Napa.

No BART to Foster City. There is a Caltrain station somewhere near Foster City, but you would probably still need a cab. Where you headed in Foster City?

In terms of restaurants, if you are looking for something nice, you might try Boulevard near the Ferry Building.

My must eats are as follows.

Dim Sum-Yank Sing
Crab and Oysters-Anchor Oyster Bar
Meat-House of Prime Rib
Sourdough-Boudin
Vietnamese fusion-Slanted Door

But there are so many choices and great places, I'm sure others will have great recommendations.

For wine tours, Sonoma is great. If you are a Cab fanatic, Napa has many more great Cab-centric wineries. :2

You're coming to the right place if you like eating. If you have a smartphone , you can Yelp a lot of places (anything with 4+ stars is usually pretty good) but here are some places I go to within walking distance of that area:


Japanese - Ryokos (on Taylor and Post) - good sushi and atmosphere
Ramen - Katanaya (on Geary and Taylor)
Burgers - Pearl's Deluxe Burgers (on Post and Jones)
Sourdough - Acme Baking Co (in the Ferry Building) or Boudins (at the Fishermans Wharf)
Good drinks and a smoke - The Occidental (on Pine and Montgomery). Only place in SF that you can smoke inside.
Thai - OSHA (on Geary and Leavenworth)
French - Fleur de Lys (on Sutter and Jones) - book now if you want a table.
Chinese - R&G Lounge (a bit far; on Kearney and Clay)

If you're in the City on Saturday, check out the Farmers Market at the Ferry building (7:00-1:00). Plenty of food and nice to walk around.

I can come up with more if you want to walk/cab a bit further (1-3miles)

Both these places may be out of the way for you, but you can take the Geary Muni, going towards the beach for both places. The first one is in Japan Town Sushi Aka Tombo, this is my usual place to stop for sushi and other things. Last time I went there, a few months ago, the slices of fish they present are a decent size.

Closer to the beach is Kabuto, It's a small hole in the wall looking place and reservations are recommended. The gf and I showed up at opening and were lucky that they sat us down they could have easily turned us away. While we sat for dinner the placed packed up with reservations all within a 20 minutes of opening! Prices are pretty high, but the food is delicious. Try the macha crem brule if you stop by.

Waiting at the airport to leave San Fran. Did a Muir Woods, Sonoma, Napa tour- was awesome!! Sat in the Sonoma cheese factory eating meats and cheeses. Ate at kabuto, Scomas, Boudins, flying ninja, Ryoko's, all were very good!!!!

Wife did the farmers market while I was at work. She loved it. Did a little China Town. It was the New Year it was fun.

Today last day we did golden bridge park and Chrissy field! Sat out there with meat and cheese from Sonoma. Sourdough bread from the farmers market. And two bottles of wine from Napa. What a beautiful day and park!!!

The other thing, everyone we met were super nice people, has to be the friendliest city I have been to!!! Except for the cable car drivers.
