Holey shed. Rats.

I built a shed. A nice shed. My neighbors all asked when the cable would be installed. Here's my shed:

http://i317.photobucket.com/albums/m...n/IMG_0565.jpg

Nice, huh? Does YOUR shed have french doors?

Anyway, don't brag about your shed. I learned that karma will get you if you do this.

The shed is 12'x12'. This means the square footage is about 3% of my yard. So what would the chance be that less than a year after I finish (still have some detail left to do, even), the wind would rip a 25' branch off my tree and deposit it, spear-like, through the roof of my shed? Apparently 100%.

Ouch man. So sorry, but can't help to chuckle some.

Able to repair yourself?

EDIT: chuckling from the way you worded above; I do hate that that happened. I understand how much a pain in the a$$ it is to have that happen. Hope nothing personal/irreplaceable was damaged.

Hopefully everyone is ok. Fixing a roof sucks. I hope everything else is ok.

That sucks. With that kind of luck you should go out and get a lottery ticket.

Sorry to hear of the misfortune. Look at it as an excuse to really do up the place. Hopefully it is not a costly fix.

I always build with screws, not nails, so tear-out and rebuild should be pretty easy. I patched it up a little with Tyvek and will fix when the snow melts. Fortunately, I kept all the leftover flashing, shingles, etc. and will only need a sheet of plywood to repair.

And the branch missed everything stored in the shed (including the glass-fronted shelving), so I guess I'm not all that bad off.

But still.

Anyone else just a little intrigued at the physics that took place to spear that branch horizontal like that :r

Sorry about your shed :(

WOW! That sucks. That is some crazy wind!! With that kind of wind I wouldn't let my kid play outside, she'd blow away.

Sorry about your shed :(

I'm more interested in why the downspout comes down in the center of the siding and not at the corner:hm

Just get some caulk fix it right up:D

The bright side? You now have the opportunity and a pre-fabricated hole to install a smoke exhaust for your new man cave!

sorry to hear it!

Just putting it out there, your homeowners insurance will cover that under your other structures coverage, might be one way to go...

On account of it being a 12' shed and the gutters only came in 10' sections and Home depot was out of the connector pieces, but the downspout piece could be used as one, and I didn't want to leave it for any length of time without gutters, so this is how it ended up and I am just a wee bit defensive about it because I think the same damn thing every time I look at it.

But it is just a shed, after all.

So why'd you put the downspout in the middle of the wall and not the corner?
:D;)

:D;)

Cuz I had one 10' piece, one downspout, two endcaps, and one pice cut to bring the whole shebang to 12'. I didn't have a piece to connect the two gutter pieces other than the downspout. The endpieces didn't fit on the downspout, so it couldn't go on the very end anyway, at least without cutting another small section of gutter to use to connect them. So I used the downspout as the connector.

Now I definitely have to redo the gutter. And now it bothers me more than the hole in the damn roof. :fl AAARGH

IMPORTANT SHED UPDATE

I had a free weekend where the weather was right so I have begun to fix my shed. Yes, I know it was damaged six months ago. That's how I roll.

Day 1- We Begin:

Mrs. Tikihut paints/protects the wood underneath the siding in preparation for the cross-hatch installation.

http://i317.photobucket.com/albums/m...n/IMG_0673.jpg

I look at the doorway and ponder steps.

http://i317.photobucket.com/albums/m...n/IMG_0675.jpg

Tomorrow: Steps are finished. Cross-hatch installed. Tear-down of damaged section begins. I make a third (and possibly a fourth) trip to Home Depot for another little tiny part that I forgot, but without which the project is at a stand-still.

Don't miss an episode.

Re: Holey shed. Rats.

Day 2:

Finished steps using composite decking material. Added cross-hatching to the bottom so Mrs. Tikihut can put in flower gardens at her leisure. (This is NOT my man cave. That's the Florida Room.)

http://i317.photobucket.com/albums/m...n/IMG_0683.jpg

Removed the debris from around the puncture wound and exposed this:

Day 4: Packed everything up and tarped over the damaged section on account of rain forcasted for Days 4-7. I LOVE Rochester. Raining now so time for a smoke.

Some work done yesterday. I'll finish this eventually.

Squared out damaged area, replaced damaged rafter, installed nailers for patches.

Re: Holey shed. Rats.

Godd day today. A little humid, but I had some time to work on the shed again. The tarp I tacked up over the hole really got a workout over the last few months, but I won't need it any more!

The good thing about this being a new shed and a small hole is that I kept the extra building materials, so I didn't need to spend a lot of dough to do this. But I didn't have any 5/8" plywood left over, so I needed to buy a sheet of that to patch with, and I did:

http://i317.photobucket.com/albums/m...n/IMG_0702.jpg

I also needed some flashing, but I had extra Tyvek, roofing felt, shingles, and drip edge.

http://i317.photobucket.com/albums/m...n/IMG_0703.jpg

And none of the siding was damaged so it went right back up. I use screws for almost everything I build, so it's easier to fix when I mess it up, and this came in really handy for this part.

Done! Only took 7 months! Now Mrs. Tikihut wants me to refinish the dining room...

http://i317.photobucket.com/albums/m...n/IMG_0704.jpg

Notice how dark the last pic is. Big T-storm hit minutes after completion. (It was already raining a little bit by the time the siding was finished.) Good weatherproofing test.
