PETA's campaign to rename fish 'sea kittens'
A CAMPAIGN to rename fish as "sea kittens" in order to improve their image has been ridiculed by the Federal Opposition.
Outspoken animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is using the "sea kitten" name as part of its push to restrict fishing.

"Nobody would hurt a sea kitten!" the group says on its website.

"People don't seem to like fish.

"We're going to start by retiring the old name for good.

"When your name can also be used as a verb that means driving a hook through your head, it's time for a serious image makeover."

The website features images of fish with cats' whiskers and ears.

PETA is using the campaign to entice people to sign a petition calling on the US Fish and Wildlife Service to stop promoting "the hunting of sea kittens (otherwise known as fishing)".

Opposition fisheries spokesman John Cobb was not impressed with the campaign, nor with PETA.

PETA has offended some in Australia with is high-profile campaign against mulesing, the practice of cutting away the skin from a sheep's rear to prevent flystrike.

Mr Cobb said the group had little credibility.

"It is hard to take an organisation which wants to change the name of fish seriously," he said.

Many people might laugh at the sea kitten campaign, Mr Cobb said, but PETA's agenda was actually more sinister: destroying the meat and fish industries.

PETA has convinced a number of large companies to boycott Australian wool which comes from mulesed flocks.

The group argues mulesing is cruel and there are better ways to prevent flystrike.

Peta are big time whackjobs, and i didn't read the article because anything about PETA just angers me.

This isn't necessarily related, but food for thought nonetheless - Fish is awesome and nutritious and delicious, but i think its weird to eat orange ruffy because it lives to like 100 years old. Fish lovers correct me if i'm wrong. Not sure if that's a double standard because i love 99% of the fish i eat - Hope i didn't jack this thread tho

When I took the Norfolk Naval Shipyard cruise last year and saw PETA's HQ, I was kinda dreaming about how nice it would be if one of those big guns misfired and removed those HQ from this blue orb! Shame on me- that's how I feel- too damn bad!

Pretty cool. I used to have an 18" snakehead I fed pinkies to. I also knew a guy who had a 25+" snakehead that we would feed Guinea Pigs to for special occasions. Meanest sea kittens I ever owned!

Ha, I wish. I remember all the panic a few snakeheads caused in local ponds (or at least the media frenzy). My favorite fish decided he would try living under the entertainment center one day. Didn't work out too well for him. I had the tank top secured, but snakeheads love to jump and when they get big, its really impossible to prevent them from jumping through the top. It was a shame. I owned many fish (had 6 tanks at one point) but he was my favorite.

I once had a conversation with a PETA person who was an incredible cat lover - had 4 of them at home.

Didn't find anything wrong with killing animals (and then stuffing it into tin cans) to feed her cats. But, thought it was wrong that I should have a steak for dinner.

The reasoning why it was OK for animals to eat other animals, and why it was wrong for people not to eat animals? "They are still animals, we've evloved past that."

Corn should not be harvested, imagine how much corn we'd have if you didn't cut it down? And grass? Stop murdering grass by using that lawnmower. Let it grow free! Isn't that what Mother Nature intended?! Learn to eat rocks. They're high in minerals, full of lots of non-organic stuff, and there's no shortage of them.
