Which one, PS3 or XBox 360

I am a guy that likes First person shooters but some of the new games look fun, i have a new HD tv and want a system that is fun,
I have an original x-box but getting kinda limited there... its gonna crap out some day.

So I am trying to find one that I will like,
any ideas?
anyone have both?

Re: Which one, PS3 or XBox 360

I bought the xbox 360 because allot of the regular xbox games I have are compatible with the new system. From what I have read the Xbox and the PS3 are not that much different when it comes to game quality. The only plus to the PS3 is it plays Blue DVD's as well.

Re: Which one, PS3 or XBox 360

I like XBOX 360, they have a ton of kick ass games. The only downfalls IMO is you have to pay $7 a month to play online, where the PS3 does not charge. The downfall to PS3 IMO is the load times and the lack of good games. :2

Re: Which one, PS3 or XBox 360

If it will be primarily for gaming, I would say Xbox

if it will be truly multi-purpose (like in my case) and you'll use it for some gaming, some media center duties, and as your blu ray player, then the PS3

I'm not a hardcore gamer (I play 2-3 different games, CoD, NCAA and Burnout) so I don't need Xbox's variety, but if you play a lot of games and play a lot, Xbox is better for that still

I cant play online at home cause no connection that far out. But I have to ask, is blue really that good to warrant geting the ps..i also wonder about which platform will make me more motion sick...any twitchy games worse than others on the compared platforms?

Good advice here. I own a ps3. I use it as a blueray player. It has built in wifi too which is nice. Game wise, as long as I have my gran turismo I am happy. If you prefer the games on xbox and want those games, get an xbox. Bluray players will be cheap enough soon and the xbox is cheaper so it will almost be a wash if you want both.

I don't know if it would warrant buying the machine just for the player, but blu ray is BAD. ASS.

Blu-ray is worth it in my opinion. And to be honest, I would not be surprised if within the next 5-6 years, it will become the "common".

Im a PS3 owner. Ive always stood behind Sony and their gaming consoles. 1. Hardware is superior. PS3 as of now is only harnessing 3 out of its 6 cells, meaning, games will only look better. 2. Free online. And now that the Home network is launching, things will get even better. 3. Games. Yes, bash all you want, but the only game that I would like to play on the XBox is Gears of War, thats it. Saying that, I would miss a LOT of Sony exclusives if I didnt have a PS3. MGS4, Little Big Planet, Killzone, RESISTANCE, Uncharted, etc...
4. Compare faultiness between both consoles. PS3 hardware problems lie in the 1-2% range if memory serves me right. Xbox? I can openly say every single one of my friends has gotten the red eye of death.

I can go on for longer, but Im tired, and Im obviously a PS3 supporter. Theres just too many negatives to the XBox 360 for me, er-go I will never buy one. But, it all depends on you and what you will be using it for, what you have played in the past, and what you are comfortable with.

Plus, the PS3 looks goddam sexy :p

Re: Which one, PS3 or XBox 360

I would add, for 400 bucks, the PS3 is one of the best blu ray players available. I processes True HD sound and all that jazz which you don't get in cheaper players. So if you have the home-theater to take advantage of its features you will be very pleased.

These reply's have all been great so far thanks every one.... keep em coming... Christmas is still coming and I might have to find one of these yet.... Does the ps connect to my Bravia series home theater throught the digital input? I dont have the HDMI input into the system but I can go into the HDMI for the TV.

Re: Which one, PS3 or XBox 360

PS3 has an HDMI and Optical Out

my cheapie home theater amp doesn't have HDMI either, so I run HDMI to the TV and Optical to the receiver. It's not ideal, but it works fine

I prefer the XBox 360, which I have. But that is because I like the true variety of games available to you. I am not very good with all the technical stuff, but as far as the games, and playability, I like the 360. :2

Re: Which one, PS3 or XBox 360

Personally I love the 360. Yea I don't have blu-ray and wi-fi on the console but games are much better and the load time is faster.

If you want to get a console just because if the blu-ray then by all means. I would give it time though because blu-ray players willl eventually come down in price and get better with technology like when plasma TV's firt came out. So if you like gaming I would recommend the 360.

Re: Which one, PS3 or XBox 360

PS3 for the sake of reliability, Blu-ray, an expanding list of game franchises, as well as some great ones from the past. Not to mention the 2 best games of easily the past 5 years are exclusive to the PS3. Little Big Planet and MGS4.

I own a 360. I'll rent exclusives for it. Anything cross platform stays with the PS3, as my friends list is much larger there.

PS3. Free online gameplay, free blu-ray player, better games. Oh yeah, I am always reading how Xbox guys are having to send theirs back to the factory b/c you get the "Red Ring of Death". Google it. That should convince you to get a PS3. I know I would hate to send my system away for a week every month or so. :2

Um. Like someone said, multi-purpose, blu-ray player, gaming, media center, ps3 hands down.

However, if you're a pure gamer, get a 360, get it modded, and downlaod/burn games for free. IMHO.

Re: Which one, PS3 or XBox 360

I would suggest the PS3, just because of how capable it is. Can access the internet, blu ray player, hook an external hard drive to it with movies or music on it, and they are starting to catch up on games.... although slowly. Have a few games like Little Big Planet that is awesome and for the PS3 only. Blu Ray was a big selling point for me.

I own both and if I had to choose which one to keep it would be my PS3 because of the Blu Ray player. However you can't go wrong with the 360.

The "Red Ring of Death" doesn't effect everyone, just mostly older ones and they are fixed for free by Microsoft, and for what its worth you can just take them to the place you bought them and get a replacement on the spot if you bought a $15 insurance policy.

I think the biggest advantage to the 360 is exclusive titles. Graphics are probably a wash.

PS3 does have the Blu-ray and the free online play.

I guess it is all about extras. :hm

I have both, but it just seems like the 360 has more FPS games. I pretty much only play FPS's. The PS3's bluray player is cool, but I only have to wait a week before the movies go from Bluray to PPV.

I have both as well and a Wii. It really depends on what you want in a console. I use my PS3 mostly because the kind of games I play are mostly PS3 games. Also, I use it as a media server. It play BluRay, listen to MP3s, and watch downloaded movies. Xbox is great for sports and FPS, but I don't really play those kind of games too often.

I'm sort-of in the market and will buy myself a console within the next few months. I've not had one since the old-school NES, being mostly a PC-gamer guy. The main two games I know off the top of my head I will get are Madden and Rock Band. But other than those, which are cross-platform, what types of games are primarily on the PS3?

I purchased my PS3 for the Blu-Ray player, but have been playing more games than I thought I would. (COD4, COD5, etc…) I love that I’m able to play on-line without having to pay a monthly fee. HDMI and optical outputs are a plus. I’m missing out on Halo 3 and Gears of War, but I would make the same decision if I had to do it again.

Re: Which one, PS3 or XBox 360

I own all three (PS3, X360, Wii) and if your looking for the best gaming experience go 360. The online gaming experience is far better than Sony's, there are far more games available for it, you get down loadable content and expansions for games much before Sony, and the new Netflix feature is tight. There's a reason it has so vastly outsold PS3. Yeah, the quality isn't as good, but MS has a good warranty in place. Compare the cost. X360 barebones can be had for 199, PS3 399.

I have to disagree with everyone over the PS3 as a good BR player. Yeah it has a blu ray player built in, but it's loud as hell. I never use it, I picked up a cheap BR player at best buy that works much better. And Home sucks.

Re: Which one, PS3 or XBox 360

Interestingly enough Sony is suffering (comparatively) in console sales.

Overall, PlayStation products finished dead last in their respective categories with the Nintendo DS selling 1.57 million units to the PSPs 421,000 and the Nintendo Wii selling over 2 million units and the Xbox 360 selling over 800,000 units compared to the PS3s 378,000 units.

Now the Wii is a run away but for FPS Sports Driving Games, all your graphics will be on the Xbox and PS3.

I would say aside from the built in blu ray both systems are comparable. Aside from us home theater buffs, blu ray is really not taking off. Don't get me wrong I love it and have two blu ray players in my house but the format is nowhere near taking over from DVD as the large portions of consumer are relatively blah about it.

Why over all sales should concern you as a gamer is pretty simple, less consoles sold means less game buyers and while there are some good titles that are exclusive to PS3 there are also some that are good and exclusive to Xbox so in my opinion that is a wash unless one of those games is a must have for you.

As for online clearly the Xbox 360 has this market dominated (so far anyway things can change) and again I would say that more users means more content etc.

If the gap in console sales continues it will be difficult for Sony to continue to keep its exclusivity on games as developers forego a chunk of the market by going exclusive.

There is also the fact that the Xbox has been out a full year longer than the PS3, this is a lifetime in game development and there significantly more titles available for the Xbox.

From a development perspective while the PS3 may have more technical horsepower on paper taking advantage of that from a game development perspective is more difficult and in testing most of the cross platform games are graphically superior on the Xbox. There are some exclusive titles that take full advantage of the PS3s capabilities but this is not across all games in the platform.

Go with what you want you will here differing opinions from both sides.

On a price basis you the Xbox is almost half the cost, and Sony has come out recently and said it will not be lowering its prices on its consoles. This I think is a mistake as clearly the money to be made from the gaming industry is in the games not the hardware. Microsoft (lovem or hatem) understands this and wants there consoles in your house, Sony seems to forever fall on its we are Sony and that is all we need. Again don't get me wrong I love Sony products in general they make great stuff, but they stumble on there own arrogance from a business perspective.

My choice as should be obvious from the slant above is Xbox 360.

The red ring of death as many like to say is a non issue as far as new consoles so don't let that scare you.

Either way I am sure you will be happy

My favorite franchises:
1) Grand Turismo
2) Final Fantasy

I'm a huge RPG gamer (not MMORPGS) so typically this leads me to the playstation (or more decently Nintendo DS) platforms.

If you're going for Madden and Rock Band, I'd get an Xbox, it's cheaper and most popular games are cross platform these days :)

Re: Which one, PS3 or XBox 360

The other question here, are there any XBox exclusive games that are not ported to the PC? I like my shooters better on the PC anyway, and would just be looking for RPG-type stuff on the console to go with sports games and rock band. So combine that with the quieter current generation of PS3 and the inclusion of a Blu-Ray player, and I think it wins out for me, even with the additional cost.

I have MMOd in the past, but unless something absolutely mind-blowing comes out, I will not again. I have better things to do with my time than spend 2-3 hours a day farming or questing to make sure I have the cash to raid on the weekends.

Either way, thanks for the input.

I'd just like to add to this that Blu-ray standalone have shipped over 2.2 million units for the year and The Dark Knight sold, not shipped, sold 600k units day 1. 147,000 Standalone units were sold Black Friday alone. I don't have the total statistic for how many have sold for the year, but they wouldn't be shipping them if they weren't selling.

This obviously doesn't include the PS3's statistics, which is the #1 selling player on the market.

Blu-ray is taking off in the US market :)

A few things that bother me about it though.......

not the best avi support for using it as a movie server
horrible flash support in the online browser, can't watch streaming tv shows on it.

Yes, something I wish was better too, but AVI (IIRC) is a Microsoft owned media container. So it's no wonder there is no support. :)

It is small, but you're comparing apples to oranges.

10+ year penetration vs 2 and a half year penetration(3/4 of a year without competition of HD DVD)

Not to mention that any TV can benefit from DVD, whereas only HDTV's will benefit from Blu-ray.

Given the limited window of 'possible' market penetration, the format war, and the relatively high price in a troubled economy. I'd say Blu-ray is thriving right now.

I don't have any numbers of DVD players sold, but it's a given that it'll be high.

I do know the market penetration of The Dark Knight was 20% for Blu-ray.

20% Blu-rays / 80% DVD's

That number should be taken as slightly inflated due to the gamer market that it appeals to, so those millions of PS3's would definitely have an impact on those numbers.

Hope that helps clarify what I mean.

EDIT:: I lied... I found the statistic :D

The statistic for market share of optical disc players this season is:

25% Blu-ray players / 75% DVD players

Also noted that Revenue for Blu-ray optical disc players tripled since last year regardless of nearly 1/3rd the cost per player.

I wouldn't say thriving. The numbers posted are actually pretty similar to DVD when it first hit. The only difference is that DVD only had one format to compete with, blu ray has several. I honestly don't think blu ray is going anywhere soon, methinks it will go the way of laser disk.

I'll save this post for next year ;)

And really... even if it did the same as Laser Disc, I'd have no problem with that. Thousands upon thousands of obscure titles reaching the format over a 10+ year lifespan, not to mention a format dedicated to the Home Theater Enthusiast.

I'll take it.

But honestly.. the sheer fact that you can buy Blu-rays in Walmart, Fred Meyer, Costco. The fact it even has on the air advertisement. The fact it will play all your standard DVD's, and in reality, even make them look better. And has sub 200$ players just over 2 years after hitting the shelves.

For those reasons as well as constantly dropping prices, I see Blu-ray players eventually replacing Upconverting players within the next 2 years. When that happens, it'll become the de facto standard simply because of more features for the same price. Whether software penetration follows suit is anyone's guess.

THREAD JACK ALERT

Jordan, I am a blu ray fan and love the format but the numbers speak volumes. Taking off isn't exactly what I would call it, the most recent numbers I see are that compared to sales in excess of 3,200,000 units of Dark Knight only 688,000 are blu ray. I wouldn't say that 21.5% represents adoption at a brisk pace. Couple the economy with the increased cost of blu players and discs (compared to DVD) and you will see that the adoption rate is not going to be as fast as VHS to DVD. With still less than 1,000 titles available on blu ray vs 10s of thousands on DVD consumers will still not jump to the new format. Couple that with an average player cost of $300+ and you won't see that huge of a rise.

DVD sales are only down 2% over this time last year, far from a huge impact to the market.

There is an expectation that blu ray will triple the number of players sold in 2009 to approximately 5.8 million units in North America. I think that blu ray will be the new standard only to be potentially made obsolete by downloading (maybe I am old school but I like to own my movies so this one I have a hard time with).

In summary I am not saying blu ray won't be adopted just not as fast as some may have thought after the format war was won.

I think it boils down to differing opinions of what is successful.

In my eyes, the format doesn't have to beat DVD to be successful. :D All that means is the studios make more money. For it to be successful in my eyes, just get me the movies I love on the format and let the accountants sort out the rest. :r

Have to disagree with you Joe. The PS3 is, still, considered far superior to almost any stand alone BR player on the market when it comes to PQ, audio, features, etc. It consisently beats BR players costing 2-3 times as much. Not me talking but the geeks out AVS forums.

Noise? Frankly, I can't hear the thing over my HT system, so what do I care?

The PS3 is equal to, if not better than the XBox 360 as a gaming platform, when you add in the additional features (BR player, media streamer, internet browsing) there's really no comparison to the two machines. Like already stated, apples to oranges, the PS3 is designed, and continues to be updated as, a multi media machine. The 360 isn't in the same class when it comes to that.

And Joe, given your love of Linux, you surely know that the PS3 is designed as a dual boot system and fully supports the installation of Linux on it right, making it a fully functional HTPC in your system rack?:D;)

I know about the linux for ps3, it seems like more trouble than it's worth. Never tried it honestly.

Really the only reason I bought the PS3 was to play games Vic, and in that department they are lacking. There are more games for X360, better online gaming experience, more DLC, their arcade is better, for gamers its the better choice of the two.
