New Cigar: Diesel Crucible

I'm looking forward to this release in 2012. I am a huge fan of the Diesel UHC.
This new cigar sounds very interesting but I get a small feeling it may be "Cubanesque" hype.

"Diesel Crucible: A limited, one time run of about 10,000 cigars. We can’t reveal all of the secrets that make this cigar so rare, but one component is a very special filler leaf grown in Honduras. At the onset of the embargo, as tobacco growers and cigar makers fled Cuba, many came to Honduras in search of new land. Most initially settled in an area outside Copan, Honduras where they grew tobacco for several years due to the climate which they felt most rivaled their native Cuba. However, after several successful crops, disease and mold set in, thus rendering the land unusable, forcing growers into regions in other parts of Copan, Jamastrán and Talanga. Almost a decade ago, one particular grower returned to the region, planting various test crops with different seeds engineered to resist the diseases plaguing the tobaccos decades before. After years of failure, the first successful test crop was harvested in 2010 and the results were fantastic. The entire first crop from 2010 was purchased by AJ Fernandez and some was set aside just for Diesel Crucible. This tobacco is strong, robust and a great throwback tobacco from a bygone era that imparts a unique taste. Diesel Crucible will come in only one size, a large torpedo that’s complex and rich with competing flavors ranging from spice and earth to leather and nuts. Crucible takes Diesel to a whole new level."(Quote from Cigar dot com)

I'd like to see the UC blend in a smaller RG, preferably a corona or corona gorda. They make a corona for one of CI's samplers, but it isn't available outside the sampler.

As much as I like smaller RGs I really enjoy the DUHC the way it is and wonder if it has room for improvement:sh.
I am sure it would be delicious!!!

Those engineered seeds sound like criollo. I was reading the CI catalog last night, and they had a blurb about the CAO Criollo.

Very intrigued by this. I have loved every Diesel stick they've put out, even the Unlimited. I pray they stay away from a Connie wrapper in the future. Keep up the great work AJ!

With the constant aim at "Cubanesque" qualities, I've often wondered why more NC producers don't run with a criollo filler and Corojo/Habano wrapper blend in at least a line or two. It's a perpetual ponderable to me in the same way it still stuns me that pretty much nobody in the NC world was doing a regular-production triple-cap until what... the late '90's? Sure, it's a little more expensive, but the 'just like the real thing!' bullet-point's gotta be worth it. It seems to me that it wouldn't be that much tougher or more expensive for a lot of NC factories to produce cigars closer in broad flavor to the typical Cuban profile, if not the complexity/subtlety. :sh

If I get one, great. But I am tired of chasing the "LIMITED" cigars.

Re: New Cigar: Diesel Crucible

I won't go out of my way to grab these if they're in too limited a supply (or if they're priced unreasonably), but if it's possible to just order a 5er without having to jump through a bunch of hoops I'll give it a try.

SteelCityBoy 04-19-2012 03:36 PM

Re: New Cigar: Diesel Crucible

I saw in my most recent CI catalog that they are going for $120 bucks for a box of 12 and $60 for a fiver. (6.5" x 52) Pretty big stick so it's going to come down to what they taste like for me. No matter what I will seek these out and give them a try. Anyone try one yet? They are claiming a limited release of only 1,000 boxes.

The value of the UHC is what makes it great. It's a good cigar at a very, very good price. This better be an amazing cigar to be worth the cost.

What he said. Was hoping AJ wouldn't go down the "limited" release road like so many others. Hope these live up to the hype.

Definitely a good looking stick...I like the label but for $12ea I dont know about that for a Diesel!!

Re: New Cigar: Diesel Crucible

Like I said, I was able to snag 10 off cbid for 42.75. Makes it 4.28 a stick. Deff not bad.

ktblunden 04-20-2012 12:41 PM

Re: New Cigar: Diesel Crucible

I'm most definitely not paying retail for these. Might try to snag some off cbid, but I will never pay $10+ each for a Diesel.

ktblunden 04-20-2012 12:43 PM

Re: New Cigar: Diesel Crucible

Just checked cbid and the only two listings are going for over retail price. No thanks.

Over $10 a stick. Wow- Diesels are one of my daily smoke cause they are really good and cheep. Ill still have to try one of these but I do hope the price does come down.

Re: New Cigar: Diesel Crucible

I bought one at CI yesterday while I was there.

It was a Diesel.

It was 12$.

It wasn't bad at all...infact, it was really good. I don't know if I'd buy another for 12$. I'd pay 6$ for it...

Nice score! You must have gotten to them before they spiked. The prices I see on there now are above retail.

Hilarious example of this on CI's weekend spotlight.

The always absurdly priced Dominican Cohiba is now part of a package deal (package which dosen't interest me) and is ---free---.

Now there is a markdown!

CigarSquid 04-29-2012 08:47 AM

Re: New Cigar: Diesel Crucible

I smoked one yesterday after lunch. I think it packed more of a punch than other Diesels. I do not love it, but I am satisfied with it

I would pick them up if I see a deal like I did to snag them now.

I smoked one of these the other week...I was impressed and it wasnt a standard Diesel at all!! That being said do I think its worth $12 EA I would say NO. I would open my wallet for say $8 EA but not 12. That being said I bought 4 so I could save a few for later...:r
