Almost accidentally at times. It's a shame that Cam Newton set almost every rookie qb record in the league this season and he was overshadowed by a guy whose throwing is abysmal and manages to win by the skin of his teeth time and time again. I'm not a fan of either the Panthers or Broncos, but I have to give it to both qbs for having amazing seasons (if for different reasons).

Since you asked, I hated him throughout college. I am not against religion, I just have no use for it
and no use for people that won't shut up about it.
But now that he is a pro, and EVERYONE who claims to know football and some who don't are lining
up to lay out his career on a chart and use words like 'never' and 'impossible' and I kinda started pulling
for him pretty hard. For those who say his throwing is abysmal, I would say it was the most abysmal
one throw overtime in NFL history. Ugly yes. WAY too complicated looking, sure. But however he launches
it down the field, he has been connecting an awfully high percentage of his crappy passes lately, and with
a tiny interception percentage. What he has lacked in accuracy his recievers have made up for with effort.

All that said, not sure if I like him now or not, but I am far past hating him. By the time you get this
far into the season, football has to try pretty hard to be interesting to me. It's kind of like the Saints
or nothing for me. And LSU got....well, there is no truly effective word to properly convey WHAT they got.
But they sure got it. So this Tebow angle at least had me watching a playoff game I couldn't really care less
about.

As a pure QB, I'd put him in 50-60 percentile, but making 2nd round of play-off’s can’t be brushed off like nothing. Let’s see when hopefully they’ll lose this weekend. Last week’s performance was solid and no one should take that away from him. When someone has a shtick like he does, it muddies the water on his true performance as people take it to heart.

As much as people want to hate on the him, you can't help but admire his drive and heart when he plays. His team believes in him and if that's what it takes to win...then so be it. I would agree with ktblunden saying Cam had a LIGHTS OUT rookie year, imagine if he was on a team that could actually win???

While I could do without all the religious stuff, he sure puts it all out there. Maybe the religious stuff is my issue, not his. Guess it is better than the thug persona....

In the end, he is a winner and appears to be a genuinely good guy....so good on him. I wish him further success.

On the down side, all this winning cost "us" Andrew Luck.... TRADE UP!!!!!

Denver was 8-8 playing in a division where no one played better than .500.
Carolina went 6 and 10 in one of the toughest divisons in the NFL and lost five games by a td or less.
Cam Newton not only won, he won against greater odds against much better teams and put up numbers that were stellar for ANY veteran qb.
The two don't remotely compare statistically or by skillset.
I won't even throw Newton's numbers up there against Tebow's because it'd be embarrasing to Tebow.
That said, Tebow has huge heart and he's got John Elway to work with him all off-season. He didn't have that benefit this past summer because of the lockout, or I think he'd have fared much better. I think he'll do big things, but in Elway fashion.
Cam Newton is an INCREDIBLE athlete, plus he's a precision passer.
His numbers, both throwing and rushing have put him in a category that has never existed in football. They can't even rank him against the greats because his skillset is wider than any quarterback who has ever hit the field.
By far, his numbers from this season show that he is the most well-rounded quarterback that has ever walked on an NFL football field.
I'm not a Carolina fan and not a Denver fan, but the numbers are what they are and individual performance is what it is. If Cam Newton never played another down, he'd likely be enshrined in the HOF on this season alone, and it's been written about in volumes. His accomplishments are astronomical. Tebow's are not.

Denver is in the playoffs and Carolina is not. Carolina was not prepared to make a run. They're building. Denver has been building for years and they're at the apex of what they've tried to accomplish, yet they backed into the playoffs and got lucky to get there. Denver is a huge football town, Carolina is not. If Tebow comes along in the offseason, Denver is going to make a statement next year.
Carolina will start building a team around Newton to make a run. They'll be competitive next year and likely turn into a powerhouse the year following.

Tebow made the very most of his opportunity against the Steelers and for that, he deserves applause. If he can keep his act together for another game, he'll really deserve some accolades. Beating good clubs in the playoffs is huge, and it'll earn him some deserved respect. If he can beat New England, I will be both shocked and impressed. Then I think he'll have earned some of the suction he's been getting.

Not a fan. He's been the beneficiary of the Denver D stepping up and playing ball. By next season, the book will be out on him, and defenses will be able to stop what he does. He works hard, but he's not the only player in the league that works hard.

The most annoying thing to me about him is the whole religion thing. I really don't care for it to be involved in my sports at all. Good for you about your beliefs. It's great that he's supposed to be a good kid. But...meh. One thing I want people to think about...how would you feel if a QB was a Muslim and bowed to Mecca after big plays/games? Would it matter? My feeling for some thing like that is "good for him, but keep it off the field".

Other than that, I think he's a great running back.

That is a bit misleading, as Tebow was 7-4 as a starter....the first 5 games of the season don't count. Two of Tebow's 4 losses were by a touchdown or less...

If given the opportunity, sure, I'd trade Newton for Tebow tomorrow....but when pulling stats, you have to be fair....

Add....I would not say that the Broncos are at the apex of their rebuilding....they fired their coach last year....:r

They last won the AFC West in '05....or three years prior to the Panthers winning their last Division Championship... I wouldn't say they are any further ahead of pace than the Panthers....AND since they didn't get a franchise quarterback in the draft...they are further behind.

It is the curse of the Snake....I'll say it again and again... Should have never benched Jake to get that douchenozzle Cutler on the field.... Jake, like Tebow, was a winner....he was also a quarterback, which was nice....:tu

Let me preface this by saying that I hold no ill will towards the guy. In fact, I think it's unfortunate that some people dislike/bash him simply because of his Faith and how he chooses to live his life.

Personal feelings aside, he's not (right now) a decent starting NFL quarterback. Did he win Sunday? Sure. Only completing 50% of your passes when you regularly faced NINE men in the box AND your offensive line gave you all day to throw? There's not a quarterback in the NFL, starting or reserve, who wouldn't have found success.

I do wish him the best, though and hope he can prove his nay-sayers wrong.

Tebow isn't responsible for his religion being on stage, he's just doing his thing. The media is making it a big deal. I can't count the number of professional athletes that make some sort of gesture towards the sky every time they make a great play, score a run or touchdown, win a race etc., or thank God or Jesus when they get interviewed. No one makes a fuss about that. Tebow himself has said that he doesn't believe God gives him any advantage in a game but he uses every opportunity the media gives him to profess his faith. His skills and abilities are valid topics for debate but his religion shouldn't be a part of it since it's the media constantly pushing that into the limelight.

I am part of the same graduating class as Tebow at the University of Florida so naturally I've been aboard the Tebow bandwagon since he was a freshmen coming off the bench to help us win a national title against Ohio $tate in '06. I can tell you this, watching every one of his games at UF he could throw the ball in college, especially the deep ball to other future NFL standouts like Percy Harvin, David Nelson or Aaron Hernandez. Look up some of his stats even against great SEC defenses. What made him a winner as well was an extremely low turnover rate, from fumbles or INTs which he has continued in the NFL.

You have to keep things in perspective. He had no off-season to work on his play, had no rapport with the 1st string offense since he was not the starter, its his second coaching staff in as many years and most importantly he is a young QB who is improving rapidly. It is very rare that a rookie QB like Newton and Dalton do so well and I think that has slanted people's analysis of Tebow. Also, the Denver receiving corps is one of the worst in the league, dropping an above average number of balls and often failing to get open. As for his statistical inaccuracy, Denver runs the ball on 1st and 2nd down so frequently that he often passes the ball on 3rd and long, which every NFL QB struggles with. Moreover, Tebow passed so well at Florida because he is at his best in a fast paced system to establish a rhythm.

Can he continue to improve and succeed? He's got two all-world qualities that allow me to believe 100% that he can and both that a guy like Scam Newton doesn't have: incredible work ethic and leadership. Look at how fast he's improved already. Not saying that Newton wont' continue to succeed, but Tebow's work ethic and leadership are light years above Newton. As for his evangelical religion, I don't think anyone can argue that his sincere belief in it has kept him grounded, humble, and able to shake off criticism which has been a huge benefit for him this season. I also think it's the biggest motivation behind his work ethic and leadership.

As a side note, its interesting that if you followed SEC football, as Brad can tell ya, Tebow mania is old news lol.

You got me. Tebow played in 14 games, I was just trying to conserve words. Much like not setting his stats against Newton's.
But Tebow in 14 games went 126/271 (46.5%) for 1,290 yards, 12 td's and 6 interceptions. He rushed 122 times for 660 yards, averaging 5.4 yards per carry with 6 td's and 6 fumbles, 2 lost.

Newton in 16 games went 310/517 for 60%, 4,051 yards, 21 td's and 17 interceptions.
He rushed 126 times for 706 yards and 14 td's. 5.6 yds per carry.
That's a pretty gaping distance, even if it's not apples to apples.

Maybe I should have said Denver expected to be at the top of their game last year. Hence the gone coach. They had all the pieces in place and are much intact.
Carolina was gutted the last two years and are in start-over mode.

Agreed on Plummer. He may not have been lighting the world on fire, but iirc they were like 7-3 when they handed the ball to Cutler. I mean really?
I don't remember the fans screaming for Cutler like they were for Tebow, but I don't follow Denver that close.

Denver loves their football, they're an awesome football town with a tremendous legacy. They outspent Carolina 125 million to 73 million this year. That payroll suggests they've spent everything but the kitchen sink on that club they're fielding, while just the opposite for Carolina.
That pretty much spells apex.
Dallas had the highest payroll at 137 million, so that kind of puts it in perspective. Tampa Bay was the lowest at 60 million.

And I absolutely LOVE how Tim Tebow expresses his Faith. I think he's an great human being. I just think he's a mediocre qb, for now.
I can't wait to see what he looks like next year after Elway has his way with him, I've said it earlier in this thread and have said it all year long. He definately suffered from the lockout.
His work ethic being what it is and Elway's being the same, there has to be a huge improvement in that club as a whole, not only from Tebow.
They need some good stick-em, too. ;)

It seems that all of the dislike of Tebow is based on his religion but several players who have been with him for the season say that this is the way that he lives his like and it is not an act. He won a Heisman, he has not embarrassed his team and he got the team into the playoffs and won a game. I will give him a pass and hope that he plays well but doesn't win against the Pats. It seems that his faith is what kills most people but I have seen a general anti-Christian bias on several boards, not just this one which is why I do not spend as much time on the boards as I used to.

I don't care about his religion, I don't have a real problem with it either.
I look at him as a football player and have not seen enough to make up my opinion of him as a pro football player yet.
He has added much entertainment to football this season though.

Ugh, don't get me started on that. No one here I can remember was ever calling for Cutler. The person that wanted him in there was Mike Shanahan. He didn't like Jake Plummer because Plummer wouldn't always listen to him and would change plays a lot and drove Shanahan nuts.

He played the best game of his life last week...unfortunately it was against the Steelers. I really don't know what will come of him in the future. He may have a big game against the Pats too...especially since he torched the #1 "D" in the league last week and now he's going up against the last ranked "D." Should be interesting...

I wish him no ill will but don't think all the hype will last...just too awkward of a delivery and once defenses figure out their college style of playing offense I think things will be a bit different.

I hate Florida football, and when he was in college, I couldn't stand Tebow, and especially the way commentators glorified and glamorized him.

When the infamous commercial was made for the Superbowl, and the media frenzy and FFRF went bonkers, I started to feel a little sorry for the guy.

Then when he was drafted, and the way the media has criticized him and his religious stand. I wanted to see him succeed. I have read that he is consistent in his actions on and off the field, remaining humble and polite. I even read one story in which the writer admitted that the media is licking their chops to find some dirt on the guy, (as though he is not a human being.)

I want to see him succeed, and I like the way he's doing it. He is living out every football movie script of the plucky underrated player that doesn't do things by the rules, but still gets it done.

I say go Tebow... except when the Broncos are playing the Steelers... of course.

I like Tebow. I think he is one of the few stand-up men in the NFL. My favorite example is when they were being beat by the Pats, and a New England Lineman went down injured and Tebow knelt down next to him and gave him the "How you doing?" treatment, and talked to him, all the way to the cart, and until the cart pulled away. You would NEVER see Tom Brady, or Big Ben, or Eli Manning do something like that. Tebow is just a good sport.

A lot of people say that Tebow is all luck, that he sucks and just gets lucky. I feel like for what he did to that team, his leadership has to have played a big role. Also, as a QB, he is mediocre, that obvious, but I think you would be hard-pressed to find a better athlete anywhere in pro sports.
