The Waxingmoon experience
Hey all...
I just received my new Waxingmoon humidor late last week. I was absolutely amazed with the quality of the final product but also had a blast with the process. Ed made is such a great experience from start to finish. I thought I'd share the progress from start to finish with some pictures. To start... here were the scale diagrams I drew up for Ed to go on. You should note that I ended up adding an extra layer of trays from this initial plan. http://i882.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/DSC01609.jpg http://i882.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/DSC01607.jpg I chose Quilted Maple for the primary wood on my humidor with walnut for a contrasting wood. It took a couple of months for Ed to procure the quilted maple. Once he got it he sent me this picture of the board that was to become my humidor. http://i882.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/DSC01434.jpg The board had some knot holes that needed to be repaired and Ed used an epoxy to fill the knots instead of throwing away the knotty wood. He had to bookmatch the board to get the height that I wanted for the humidor. Here's the pictures of the front panel of the board once bookmatched. http://i882.photobucket.com/albums/a...moon/Front.jpg Here's a picture of the box once it was built. It wasn't a humidor at this point since it hadn't been lined and didn't have a lid. Ed wiped it with mineral spirits to give me an idea of it's finished look. http://i882.photobucket.com/albums/a...oon/finish.jpg |

Re: The Waxingmoon experience
I had some very specific requests for the bottom section of the humidor. Ed really came up with something special to fit those custom requests. The bead tray is on the right and the two sections are 6.5" and 7.5" to accommodate toro and churchill sizes. The dividers are all removable and moveable.
http://i882.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/DSC01634.jpg Note that none of these are my pictures... they are all pictures that Ed took the time to send to me as the building process was underway. I looked forward every week to the new pictures Ed would send me of the progress. It was a TON of fun to watch for myself. Here's a picture Ed sent me of the unfinished humidor built but not yet lacquered. The Lid is absolutely amazing. He said that he had to enter dimensions into his CAD program to get the proper bevel on the lid from the outside to the inside piece. Each of the three sections of the lid had to be seperately beveled so he had to plan it out in advance. http://i882.photobucket.com/albums/a...humidorlid.jpg Here's pictures of the packaging. Ed has the humidor packaged at the UPS store and it comes packaged to withstand a nuclear blast... It was blast for me to open it though. It was like Christmas morning for me... http://i882.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/DSC01686.jpg http://i882.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/DSC01687.jpg |

Here's the proof... http://i882.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/DSC01698.jpg |
Re: The Waxingmoon experience
Here was the grand reveal. My wife wanted to document me opening the package because she's basically heard nothing besides humidor talk for four months.

Re: The Waxingmoon experience
Finally... here is where it is going to sit from here on out. I had Ed build the humidor to the dimensions of the cart. I think it's a medical cart I picked up for cheap at the local university recycling center. It is in great shape and is built to last. It works wonderfully because it has two drawers for miscellaneous cigar "stuff" and a place below for my flavored humidor (mostly for my wife).
http://i882.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/DSC01709.jpg This picture is basically useless but you can see how shiny that finish is! http://i882.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/DSC01707.jpg A BIG thanks to ED for the awesome humidor... it is an amazing piece of woodwork and he made it a fun process from start to finish. I can't say enough good things about Ed himself as well as his skills as a woodworker. He's an artist and an all around great guy! Randy |

Re: The Waxingmoon experience
I want to thank Randy for his patience! He knew he wanted quilted maple and as things stand, quilted maple is about the most difficult wood to get your hands on.....
As my wood vendor told me.... as well as wood vendors from SC to CA.... the guitar makers (luthiers) usually snag it all up..... I'm sure you've all seen the quilted maple guitars in the hands of folks like Carlos Santana.... (although his primary guitar is curly maple).... Nonetheless.... the only place quilted maple comes from is the Pacific Northwest.... And then, only about 1 out of 1000 maple trees that are felled are quilted.... When those guys up there run across quilted maple, it shoots through the wood market like a speeding bullet.... and ALWAYS, the first people they call are the luthiers... And, the luthiers have there reservations in... I've been lucky to have a wood vendor that knows and appreciates what I do and he went above and beyond to secure this for us.... I had one shot to get it right... as I only had one board to work with... talk about measure twice and cut once.... one mistake and Randy would have been looking for a smaller medical cart.... So, Randy...thank you for your patience and I'm sure she'll hold the humidity just as you would expect.... Enjoy, Brother! And...thank you for giving me the opportunity to work with quilted maple again.... Always a pleasure. |
