Cigar for a guest ?

Whenever you have some pals or just guests coming over, what cigars do you offer them? Do you have some special brand you keep around for them or do you let them pick from whatever you have?

Emjaysmash 05-10-2011 01:15 PM

Re: Cigar for a guest ?

If they are normal cigar smokers I let them pick, if they are novices I usually grab whater nice mild cigar I have on hand.

Guantanameras. That'll teach them to show up empty handed.

Re: Cigar for a guest ?

I have an entire side of a drawer filled with unbanded NC's ranging from med quality to decent quality. There's probably about 30 or 40 in there. They are reserved for guests that either don't smoke cigars and want to try one or for the neophytes to the cigar world. Good enough quality that they will hopefully get them hooked, but not expensive enough that I will be sad when they pitch it after 10 mins :tu

For my friends, they are entitled to any cigar in my Cabinet granted its not being reserved for a special occasion.

Eh Usually a CC robusto. Maybe a PSD4, Boli RC or RyJ SC. They are only about $6-$7 a piece and I won't be too angry if they pitch them. Of course too angry is relative to the person in question :D

Ha, who would ever visit me?? That's like saying, "Which Tyrannosaurus Rex repellent do you think works best"?

If I DID have cigar smoking friends coming over, like the rest said, there is nothing that is off limits to a true
aficionado. A person who says, "Ohh neat...cigars! I always wanted to try one of those.", they get either a
RyJ tubo or a Punch Royal Selection No.12. Maybe a Sancho Bachilleres or even a Los Statos Deluxe Delirios.

DAMMIT!! I went over 4000 posts and didn't notice it.

I gave a true friend a 40 dollar Montecristo for his new years celebration. He took a couple puffs and said he didn't like it. It's a good thing he's a good friend though cause when mine was done I clipped all signs of him of his and smoked that one too.

Re: Cigar for a guest ?

Nobody really gets near my humi just because I'm very select as to who comes by my home. Of those whom I smoke with that aren't regular smokers I usually pick a few pairs of cigars that I am willing to smoke myself, they probably won't take offense to, and won't break the bank. I let them pick from those pairs and we both can share the experience they choose. As for my BOTL, only a few have come by to smoke and they have brought their own sticks. When I am out I have let my brothers shuffle through my little 40ish count humi and they can pick what they want as long as it hasn't been gifted to me or is an intended gift for another that night. When my blood brother comes by I pick several pairs of strong cigars usually since he smokes a lot and the strong stuff works best for him.

In fact, it does depend on who the guest is and his predilection for cigars.

If they are good friends then anything I have. If not its usually some Cuesta Rey sungrowns that I have that I don't smoke anymore.

A fumas...LOL, no just kidding, i do like that cigar though for being a cheapy... No i am with the others if they are a regular cigar smoker then i will show them what i have, no i have a top drawer that is only mine, i dont mean to be selfish but they are more collectibles, or limited or cc (which i have like 6 cc total so no lol)... if they are inexperienced then i will offer something mild...

Re: Cigar for a guest ?

It's pretty much open humidor at my house, although I'll steer it based on what they like and such. Most people who are newer to cigars are just stoked that they are smoking a cuban cigar so they usually don't care. :)

I used to just let them have free reign but for some reason the inexperienced smokers know enough to take my nicest crap lol. I am thinking of turning my traveldor into a friendador when I am not actually traveling. I will just put a bunch of mid range smokes in it and they can choose from there. I am tired of them choosing $15-$20 smokes and only smoking a fourth.

Nothing selfish about that. Some sticks are for special occasions or can be a bit personal.

I keep a 100 ct humidor for house guests so they can have free reign over their pick. Most of our friends arent regular smokers and its a novelty for them. However when any of my friend come over they can have whatever they want out of any humi

That's really the best plan. If you are keeping track of 3 ice chests and 4 humidors, what's one more?
Just a small humi full of nice-but-not-too-nice sticks that will never raise so much as a tear in the eye
when they invariably, as one said before, get smashed out like they were a cigarette or something, lol.
If you do it right, they think that's your humidor. 'WOW, you're letting me dabble in your personal
stash, lol.' (No, my personal stash is inaccessible at the present time, hahahaha.)

This. Or whould I say "these." 99% of my friends don't smoke cigars. A very good friend whom I am starting to reconnect with after a 6 year hiatus was up a couple weeks ago. We started with a new PSD4 to share. The next day, we had a couple LGC MdO3's from 2000. Later that night, I gave him a 98 Punch Corona. He did pretty well with all of them, and smoked at least 2/3's of the way and enjoyed what he did smoke.

I would feel worse if my friend hated a cigar and smoked the whole thing out of obligation, instead of just being honest and either getting rid of it or passing it back to me.

Re: Cigar for a guest ?

Actually all my friends i know now are cigar smokers, so they pretty much bring there own crap, and we either trade or they will come and i will give them something, and then vice versa next time i am over to there place...But i dont go anywhere now without my travel box, so i always have something on had, but honestly i wont give someone something that i would be glad to smoke myself... I would not go buy some piece of crap just to keep for guests, no way, first i dont have room for it, and second, i want to give them a good experience, i have two buddies that if not for me they would not have ever smoked cigars... but now one smokes a few a week and one smokes like 1-2 a month on special occasions, but what if i would have gave them crap, they prob would have been like yuck and never bought a cigar ever again... just my 2 cents...

I open the coolers and let them choose what they want. Everything is fair game except for the box I keep gifted smokes in. With that said I do steer them into something that's smoking good or something I think they can enjoy.

rebelknight 05-11-2011 09:20 PM

Re: Cigar for a guest ?

I don't have a lot of cigars to go around but when I have friends over and we want to smoke a cigar I won't refuse any body a cigar. What they get on the other hand is up to me. That doesn't mean that they will get bad smokes either. I have pretty much 3 tiers of smokes that I will hand out. Cigars that I would smoke myself that are reserved for family and close friends. Good cigars that just really aren't what I'm in too which I will give to other friends that I'm not as close with and then some stuff that I would just never smoke or really mild smokes that I give to people I'm just meeting or people new to smoking. For example I gave my brother an Opus X when he wanted to smoke with me and some of my friends. Another example is how I give out the stuff that I don't like that has been gifted to me to people that I don't know or like enough to get my good stuff

Like a lot of you, I give free reign (mostly) to my cigar smoking friends. I do have an off limits area where cigars are aging, so they're off limits to me as well.
I'll usually pick a cigar for those that are uninitiated. That way they don't accidentally choose something they won't like. Sometimes they don't like it anyway, though...c'est la vie

Pat1075 05-11-2011 09:53 PM

Re: Cigar for a guest ?

I give people the same thing that I would smoke just based on their preference. I ask them strong medium or mild. A lot of the novices end up with ashtons or davidoffs. Meanwhile I tend to hand out more padrons, opus, and CC's to my closer friends or guys who have been smoking longer.
