Preferred resale type?

Curious because I've seen full boxes for resale by members in various states of "openness".

Which is the preferred method when purchasing from others?

Sealed box
or
Opened for inspection

Does one or the other demand more monetarily? i.e. is an unopened box more of a "collector's item" than an opened box? etc.

Just curious what others thought.

Open hard to ask for a refund from a brother who is not to blame.

Like to keep a box as perfect as possible. Sealed is sealed if I plan on letting it sit. Now if I am smoking them then open.

When I buy from private sellers, I would prefer open so I can make sure there aren't any beetles or mold, but from a retailer, sealed since I can return them if it has those

Re: Preferred resale type?

I voted for "Box still sealed" but a lot depends on what the specific smoke is. If it's a smoke that was released a couple of years ago, I'll still consider buying a box if it is opened and the seal has been broken, especially if it's an LE or discontinued stick. If it's a regular production smoke that is still being produced, then I prefer the seal(s) to be intact and the box to have been unopened. It's case-by-case on individual transactions and I assume/accept the risk of some beat-up sticks in this scenario. (However, for retailers, that box had better arrive sealed and unopened.)

Doesn't make a difference to me. I tend to open each and every box that I receive for inspection so I wouldn't let it effect price when buying a box from someone else. When the box arrives to my home it's getting opened either way.

I think the question is Preferred resale type if I'm not mistaken that takes retailers out of the question. IMHO

It does, but one needs to trust his/her sources in a resale transaction too.
That's one reason why I love this place.
Plus, a lot of the online retailers with wicked good prices are nothing more than resellers themselves. :2

oh, way to go me! Good thing my poll vote was still accurate, it wouldn't effect the price I expected, but I would prefer open since I would know for a fact what the cigars look like and any problems that may be had, but then again, I only buy from someone who I would trust to send what I paid for

Yeah true, I would have trouble asking a BOTL to give me my money back if I bought a sealed box he had stored to long for him to go to the vendor is the only reason I mentioned it.

I also think from what I see being new or not that peeps here are trust worthy:tu

Dave

Good poll question dude!

Depends on the source of the cigars, would prefer to have the box sealed but am now starting to open all boxes due to a beetle outbreak recently.

woah now you can't just be dropping that kind of talk in here with out an explination. how bad were the beetles? do you know where they came from? what did you lose? how have you contained the problem?

My preference is for sealed, but as long as the cigars are fine it really doesn't make a difference.

I want them to be opened so there are no surprises. I always ask non-US vendors to open and inspect the cigars before they ship them out as well.

As of now...vote is 45 either opened or doesn't matter..far more than the 13 sealed voters.

Sealed voters - what makes the sealed box better to you?

I guess, for me, it's a personal hang-up. Not sure I can explain "why" past that, it's just what I prefer.

I guess it was a question for the "collector" out there. For example, those seeking The Face for resale in a couple years...what got me thinking.

Re: Preferred resale type?

Depends on the source, or what I'm buying. Over-seas buying, I like them to be opened and inspected, and shipped with extra padding in the box so the heads/feet don't get all beat up.

Buying in Country, either way is fine.

As for the Collector in me, I want any "collectable" boxes in their original format. Half the draw to alot of collectors is originality. They want to open the box, and see the sticks still bound in paper, or foil, or wax paper, still have the wheel banded, etc...IMHO

Re: Preferred resale type?

I agree, it depends a lot on the source.
but overall, I would prefer open. It allows m to look in and verify the condition of the contents before I walk away with them.....

mosesbotbol 10-18-2010 10:32 AM

Re: Preferred resale type?

They should be open. The seller should know the condition as well as buyer before concluding business.

What if the sealed box had real crap cigars in it? How would the seller know? Now the sale has become a hassle. I appreciate knowing that the box is/was sealed, but before I buy something privately, both parties need to be in concert on what is being sold.

Re: Preferred resale type?

I don't care if it is an individual reselling or a company. I want it opened and inspected before I pay for it. :)

Re: Preferred resale type?

If I was selling a person a box of cigars and it was sealed, which only about 8 percent of the boxes I
own ARE, I would ask, do you want it sealed or not. If they selected sealed, the problems inside
would be their own problem once they opened it up. But if the seal was intact, I WOULD sure ask.
When it comes to cigar state, I do not play. I am not Joe Vendor, with unlimited boxes to replace with.

Re: Preferred resale type?

I guess it depends on the cigars. I may want an unopened box so I know that they are all the same and not from different boxes. In other cases, I may want to know the box has been opened and is free of mold or beetles. I guess a sealed box is more enticing though. Like Vin's JAR of Tat Blacks. TEMPTING AS HELL, but way to rich for my skinny wallet.

As long as the product is in good condition I will take it how I can get it.

Re: Preferred resale type?

I actually prefer a box to be opened for inspection. I have purchased full/sealed boxes from many places (private and shops) that had damage or mold. In the case of a shop, they almost always replace it. But PMing a private party and saying that the box you got was all messed-up ... yea, doesn't go over so well. I'd prefer them to check first.
