How do you brave the cold when smoking outside in winter?
Alright... I know this is a little early... well, a lot early... and a little depressing... but, I'm trying to plan ahead. Last winter was a cold one for me! So, I smoke my cigars outside on my deck... all year long. I have no place inside to do so. In the summer this is not so bad... but when it gets cold outside this gets pretty painful. The last few winters I've gotten through by just bundling up real good... A couple of jackets, a hat, and gloves. But on colder days I'm still freezing.
As a result, I'm seriously considering my options for some kind of heating out there on my deck. I'm starting to look now because I'm thinking I may be able to still get a good deal as heating is still out of season. The deck is a good size, and all wood. At this point I'm leaning towards a liquid propane gas (LPG) patio heater. I found this one on line, which looks like a really good deal: http://www.patiomarket.com/product/l...nt-special.php So, does anyone else use one of these regularly for smoking outside during the winter? If so, how long does the 20lb propane tank last? Does the heater really keep you warm? Is it worth it? Should I be worried about safety? My wife is making a stink about safety... thinks I'll burn the house down. They have auto-shutoff tip-over sensors, which is nice. I have a gas grill no my deck... similar thing, right?! Any other suggestions I may not have thought of would be greatly appreciated as well. I want to be ready to roll come the winter time... Thanks guys! :D |
Re: How do you brave the cold when smoking outside in winter?
I use the Mr. Heater 3 burner that attaches to the propane tank. You can direct the heat right at where you're sitting.

Re: How do you brave the cold when smoking outside in winter?
I have two heaters -- one similar to what you posted (from Costco) and a Mr Heater Double Propane Heater (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/ima...=kitchen&img=0). Usuallly I just use one, but if it is particularly windy or cold I use them both.
A good umbrella or awning or other overhead protection is also a good idea :) Lights for reading, power for a TV, laptop, etc., may also be a good idea :) |
Re: How do you brave the cold when smoking outside in winter?
There are a few options:
1) Garage. This is ideal if you MUST go outside. You're going to waste a lot of fuel using one of the propane type heaters outside. Well, you will go through it a lot faster than if you were in some type of enclosed space. I have a torpedo heater in my garage. I do auto detailing as a side hobby for extra income. This makes my garage around 50 degrees on low setting, and is good for 12+ hours on a few gallons of diesel fuel/kerosene. I wash cars all winter long out there in a t shirt and jeans. 2) Kitchen. I have smoked a few cigars right at the kitchen stove. Just have to have the exhaust fan on. Mine is the type that is the microwave/fan combo that mounts right over the range. I set my ashtray on the head of the stove, near the wall. There is never any lingering smell. 3) Install an exhaust system in your mancave. This is what I'm working on right now. Another member here linked me to a fantech 10xl. Retails for around 400. Then ductwork, and some wiring, and a separate circuit on the breaker box for the power. I'm allowing between 7-800 for the project. Hopefully its done before winter. The torpedo I have is similar to this one: http://i951.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/CIMG2733.jpg |

As soon as it gets cold, I start hanging out at the local B&M's, if thats not possible I find reasons to take longer car trips.

Good info guys... thanks!
I have a wife and kid at home... and the wifey wouldn't let me smoke inside even if I wanted to. She even gets upset when I smoke in the garage... although, that may have to be the answer this winter... :) |

I almost never use the high setting on the rosebud heater, and most of the time on the umbrella type heater. BTW 90 bucks is a hell of a deal on the full size model you linked to Bryan. |

During the cold Indiana winters, I smoke only at the local cigar bar and occasionally in the car. I love cigars but not enough to be uncomfortable while smoking.

SUCKS! I was about to order that damn heater I linked to and the site is down for maintenance!!! I think CA just bought up their entire stock of heaters... ;)

Re: How do you brave the cold when smoking outside in winter?
Lots of winter gear on...inside a shed so the wind doesn't get me...petite corona or smaller sized smokes....
OR Smoke while shoveling.. OR Support your local B&M and smoke in there. |
Re: How do you brave the cold when smoking outside in winter?
I turned the sandbox from my kid's old playhouse into a firepit. I bundle up a bit and make a big fire. I sit right next to it and can stay warm enough.
This is in northern Colorado winters, mind you. The only time I'm not out there is if it's snowing or if the temp is less than -10 (-8 was rough, but I persevered). |

I move from the patio to the garage where I have a parabolic heater when it's too cold for me.

Re: How do you brave the cold when smoking outside in winter?
I have to brave the heat when I'm smoking outside in the winter.
When I used to live in TN though, I had a ton of blankets. |
Re: How do you brave the cold when smoking outside in winter?
I made a small cigar room in the basement. This was cheap and easy.
I installed a bathroom exhaust fan and vented it similar to how you would vent a clothes dryer. I purchased a couple roles of thick guage plastic from the painting department at Lowe's. I used a cable/romex stapler to secure everything to the bottom of the floor joists (to keep smoke from going upstairs) and then also hung the plastic from floor to ceiling (to keep the smoke from getting to the rest of the basement). The only down side is that people think I'm running a meth lab when they see it the first time. All in all it only cost about $150 for everything. This may be an option if you have a basement and are handy (...and also don't mind being called a hillbilly). |

Re: How do you brave the cold when smoking outside in winter?
xapa - nice man cave?
I like the ingenuity. That's much better than braving the bitter cold. I'm in northern MN. Lots of -20 days in the winter time. As long as there's a good blanket of snow, my garage stays pretty warm without the heater(well, maybe a 10 degree differential from outside.) But it makes a big difference being out of the wind. |

Sit outside without a jacket, maybe a nice pair of Hawaiian shorts and some sandles . I was born in Michigan lived there for 20 years.....TN winters are a joke.

Re: How do you brave the cold when smoking outside in winter?
In past years I've never smoked during the winter. But this year I'm looking to fix up part of the basement for myself. My wife never goes down there anyway so I may install an exhaust fan in the window and a heavy curtain in the doorway between my work bench and the rest of the basement.

Re: How do you brave the cold when smoking outside in winter?
I have a electric furnace hanging in the garage. I only run it when I am planning on smoking which is greatly reduced during the winter. It's around 35,000 btu's and does a nice job of getting a 3 stall garage, insulated and rocked, to around 60-65 degree F in about 15 minutes or so. I bought it from a guy on craigslist for about $250 and paid my neighbor $50 to run the wires, he is an electrician. Works great for those cold Wisconsin winters. Helps melt the snow off the cars also.

I just sit in the backyard in my shorts and a sweatshirt. Sometimes I light a fire in the firepit. :D
