Cool idea for a thread.

GWN 06-02-2010 05:47 PM

Re: Origin of User Names?

GWN = Great White North, as in the often-frozen place where Bob and Doug hail from.
In hindsight, I'd probably choose something else now, since some may suggest it's possibly racist, but that wasn't the intent.

Emjaysmash 06-02-2010 05:51 PM

Re: Origin of User Names?

Emjaysmash is a username that I've had since second grade. It was originally mjsmash, using "mj" my first and middle initial and also my nickname, and "Smash" the title of the first CD I ever bought- Smash by The Offspring.
mj has been lengthened to emjay because I eventually ran into a problem with someone already using "mjsmash" (not on this forum) and the change stuck.

whew.

BlackDog 06-02-2010 05:58 PM

Re: Origin of User Names?

I'm BlackDog because when I first had to create a user name for eBay many years ago (I was on eBay early) I was stumped what to call myself, and happened to be drinking a Black Dog ale. Viola! A new internet user was born.

I lost the middle space somewhere along the line because I made a mistake registering on a bulletin board, but it wouldn't let me re-register with the same user name. So I dropped the space so I could re-register. Since then I've made all my registrations without the space.

14holestogie began because I usually smoked churchills or larger on the golf course and that's how long they usually lasted.

Also happen to live on the 14th hole at my local course, but never made the connection until later. It's karma. :)

Re: Origin of User Names?

Way back in 1995 when I got my first PC and internet service a friend was telling me about chat software called Pirch, he spelled it for me and everything.

I mistook the software name for his nickname in said chat software. So I took a similar fish, modified the name by taking out the "e" so my friend could find me in the chatroom.

It all made sense later on after I got my 28.8 modem hooked up and got the thing turned on but when he was explaining all of it, I was very confused.

fhrblig 06-03-2010 12:06 AM

Re: Origin of User Names?

Mine is a reference to The Tick. In one of the comic books, the Tick is stalking another superhero (a parody of Superman) and trying to get him to be his sidekick. He gets a job with him at the 'Weekly World Planet' newspaper as the crossword puzzle editor, but is fired because the crossword puzzle he creates has only two words: 'fhrblig' and 'Pabst'.

"Yeah, but they cross!!"

My CB "handle" from way back in the early 1970's was "Cowboy Kid" When I first started on the WWW via AOL, CowboyKid was already taken. my town's name is often abbreviated as S'ville, so, I took SvilleKid, since my CB handle wasn't available.

mithril is from Lord of the Rings, G60 is the engine in the VW Corrado I used to own. Usually I just use mithril but when it's taken I append G60 to the end.
