Favorite ring, what do you like to smoke?
 

What's your favorite ring guage?
I've worked my way down from torps and toros to robustos to corona gordas. Seems I really levitate to the 50 and under rings almost exclusively.
For me, a 46 ring box pressed is perfect. I wish all my cigars were like that.
What does it for you? Why?

Lanceros, Corona/Corona Especial/Corona Gorda tend to be my favorites. For sticks that only come in larger RG i try to stick with Toro, or Robusto, and rarely smoke Churchills.

Like pretty much everyone, I stared in the 50+ RG arena. Now, pretty much anything over a 46 is too much for me.

As an example... I love RASS and Mag50 flavor profiles, but I HATE the ring gauge.

I've been favoring the 50 and under gauges. I started with big, beefy ring gauges, but I'm slowly transitioning to the smaller guages becuase I've enjoyed how they smoke.

I still like the torps though...those will always have a place in my heart. :D

I like 2 sizes; 42ish and 54. The 42 is a perfect size for me for a quicker smoke but when I'm in the mood for a longer smoke the 54 works perfect.

I seem to be gravitating towards Lanceros (35-38ish), Lonsdales (44-46ish) and Coronas (42-44ish) lately but that doesn't mean I don't like a nice Robusto (my current favorite stick is a robusto 52rg).

I'm not a huge fan of ultra-large ring gauges (58-60ish) because I find it difficult to get a pull off of sometimes...

Although when it comes to a good cigar, I rarely pay too much attention to ring gauge; I'm usually more concerned with smoke time.

I pretty much like anything under 50. I'll smoke a Robusto, but I prefer to smoke sub 50 RG.

52 and under. 54 is pushing it a bit. Cant stand 56 at all.

My tastes have changed drastically over the years and continue to do so. I started big, like +50, then got into CCs and my preference began dropping lower and lower towards PCs and Lonsdales. but lately I've been creeping back up a little to 44-46, and I'm starting to enjoy Robustos a lot more frequently as well.

I say the bigger the better. If it fits in your cutter, go for it!

I've not had a whole lot of luck with lanceros. They always seem to run on me and they're way too long. They get in my way and kinda handcuff me.
I haven't seen any 4 or 5" lanceros, that'd be a nice length in that ring. A lot less awkward.
As much as I like a PC, I bet I'd really love a shorter lancero.
Maybe I should revisit them and chop a few inches off? :D
I've always thought I would really enjoy the Oliva V lancero, but my few experiences were just plain awful. Maybe if I put a box up for a year, they'd burn right for me, eh?
At what RH are you guys keeping your lanceros to make them burn right for you? How long are you setting them back before you dig in?

Corona Gorda is my favorite, but I love me some lanceros and panatellas as well.

The trick I've learned with Lanceros is to smoke them slow and pull on them lightly. Rh is around 65-68.

For a smaller Lancero (which you've probably tried) look at the DPG Black Label 1977 AKA Petite Lancero or Corona Especiales. Even the CC Cohiba makes a Corona Especiales. Same basic ring gauge in a shorter smoke.

The thing with lanceros is that they usually draw like crap for me. :(

I tend to prefer the 50 rg if anything.

And Scott, box pressed 46 gauge? PAM Monarca?? lol

anything that is in the 45-50 range for me. One of my favs would be a CAO gold maduro. 5 and a half by 45. Great for a short smoke. Anything over 55 is like meh, not so much, for me anyhow.

Lanceros are too long and tend to either go out or get hot from being so thin IMO. I prefer 48 ring and above and no longer than 6". I have no need to smoke a 3 hour Churchill, ever. I very rarely smoke any 60 ring cigars, but the Miami Knuckle was tasty!

48-54 is typical for me....60 was a "novelty" that quickly wore off....that being said, lately I've been smoking some coronas, 42 ring, with very pleasing results!

I like them a little larger, around 54. They seems to burn a little cooler and a little more flavor.

My current favorite vitola is the panatela larga at 28 x 6.9, after smoking those for a while even Lanceros look thick at 38. I'll still smoke an occasional robusto, but most of what I smoke are coronas and panatelas.

Robustos here..... I do have quite a few 46's in my humi seasoning up, but I have yet to smoke one.

42-50. I love robustos. 52 is starting to push it, unless it is a torpedo, or just a really good cigar that I happen to have found a deal on in that size. 56-60RG is only fun once in a long while, I don't really like the way they smoke. On the other side of the spectrum, as much as I do like the occasional lancero, I really can't smoke them all the time. They taste great, but the shape just doesn't feel as good in my hand especially at the beginning of the smoke when it is still long. I feel like I'm going to break it.

46 is perfect for me. Mostly smoke 42-48. 54 is the largest I'll smoke.

40-46 ring for me, Petite Coronas are my go to over all size.

I can't stand anything much larger than a 52. 54 is pushing it unless it's a torpedo. Lately I've been dabbling with 38's and 42's. Lancero's have never seemed to let me down.

Scott, there are a lot of great CC short and thin smokes, but I don't know that they'd fit your tastes as they're all pretty mellow and sweet. The Laguito No. 2 is 38 by 6' (Monte Esp 2, Cohiba Coronas Especiales) and the Por Larranaga Panatelas and Montecarlos are both quick smokes. There are others, but those are a good place to start.:2

I levitate to a 50 RG faster then anything. But if the smoke is right, I'll smoke to a 46 RG but I prefer a 50 to 54. :ss

I do like the Monte 5's, I have no idea what ring they are. There sure isn't much to them, though. I tried a LGC Lancero (cc, don't know the proper name) the other night and it tasted like ass. More like ass and burned wet straw with a mold chaser, actually. :D
I am going to seek out some Cohiba Coronas Especiales. I bet I'll enjoy them from time to time. Cohiba always gives me a nice sweet wheaties flavor that I really like, and I very much enjoy Cohiba maduros.

Not really particular on a specific size in general, as I can preemptively find merits (and faults) in any given size, and would much rather base my choice of a cigar on what size I prefer the profile of in the particular line I happen to be about to smoke. Sometimes it's a larger ring, sometimes it's a smaller ring, sometimes longer sometimes shorter.

That being said, I do tend to avoid most cigars over 56RG. There are a few exceptions though.

For me it's 46-50. Haven't enjoyed the lanceros (except the El Triunfador) and not a fan of fat RG sticks. :2

Have loved the Churchill size since I started this hobby and while I'm not adverse to smoking other sizes ( RG ) I always return to the Churchill because of the ratio of wrapper and filler gives me the best taste plus the aspect that I have that kind of time to devote to a larger cigar. If I want to taste the "wrapper" and its influence I will buy the lancero or petit size. Conversely, if its all about the filler I go with the bigger size even though I love maduro wrappers. The 'sweet spot' in the Churchill lasts longer and that is what cigar smoking to me is all about in being able to enjoy the best part of it for the longest time.

I'm all over the place with this at this point. I started out buying nothing but Robustos. Then, I began messing with the CC's and the Petite Corona has quickly become one of my favorites as well.

I generally go for a 50. 48-54 is my comfort area. I've had a 60, but didn't care too much for it.

I like 50 and over. I have many 60 ring cigars. They look cool and I get more flavors out of them. But thats just me.

46-48 suits me perfectly, but I really enjoy everything below 46 as well. 50-52 I can deal with but once it gets over 52 I don't enjoy them as much and don't have too many unless it's a Figurado (Torp, Beli, Perfecto, etc.) where I can clip to my preferred size. Don't get me wrong though...I'll smoke anything...that's a cigar. :ss :ss

I'm in the same boat with the Figs. If I'm smoking a larger ring gauge I'll look for something like a Beli, Torp, or Pres. where it's not as jaw-busting.

I have been all over too. I started off liking the larger rings, 52-60. I was smoking nothing but NCs. Now I smoke a mix of NCs and CCs. The CCs aren't really offered in 52+ rings. So, as I began to smoke more CCs I began to enjoy many different shapes and sizes. Although I would say I don't smoke too many lanceros but there are a few I really enjoy. I mostly buy corona/pc, robusto, or torpedo/belicoso vitolas. So I guess mostly 42-52 lately.

After reading what I wrote, I'm sure that it doesn't help much...lol
