Do you rotate?
For those who have boxes in their humidors, do you rotate your cigars? IE Take all the boxes out, and flip every cigar over exposing the opposite side to the air? I've heard people mention this, but I wonder if it really helps. I'm assuming it only applies to dress boxes, but it seems like a big PITA. Plus, the better part of me thinks it probably doesn't have any positive effect on aging. Especially since you are exposing the cigars to oxygen every time you flip them.
I would expect you could just remove a cigar from the box a day before and get a better result. |
Re: Do you rotate?
Never really heard of anyone doing this. Would be interesting if it actually made a noticeable difference

Re: Do you rotate?
I would, however my cabinet is packed so tight im afraid if i took everything out id never be able to configure everything back in there... When i had room to spare i used to do this once a month... i do it in my singles drawer though.

Re: Do you rotate?
Informally I guess, I pull them out and smell the wonder and sort of roll them around occasionally. Mostly just to enjoy the fragrance and make sure there is no mold which there fortunately never is. :)

Re: Do you rotate?
I've heard of people rotating boxes, which I guess I do on an informal basis when forced to play cigar tetris with new acquisitions.
I have to admit I haven't heard of anyone who rotates every single cigar within the box itself though. |
Re: Do you rotate?
Im sorry, i read through the original post way to fast and didn't take it all in... Rotating boxes yes ive done, but cigars inside boxes no i haven't as said above the only time ive actually fished through boxes was to check for mold.

Re: Do you rotate?
I do every couple of months in the spring and summer months but more for the sake of checking to make sure I have no visitors (ie beetles)but as mentioned above my cab is packed so tight that every time I remove all the boxes I can usually be heard cursing up a storm shortly there after because I usually have trouble getting them to fit back in the way I had them prior to unloading them all. I definitely don't rotate for humidity purposes though.

Re: Do you rotate?
I just keep all my boxes half empty, that way I can just pull them out and give them a shake or two, and viola! Instant cigar rotation.
Was debating about mounting a lazy susan on the wall and screwing the humidor to it, that way I could just walk by and give the humidor a spin like they do with the wheels on game shows. |
Re: Do you rotate?
Within the box? No ...

Re: Do you rotate?
Most of my cigars are celloed, so rotating individual cigars would be futile. I wouldn't do it even if they weren't, anyway.
|
Re: Do you rotate?
I rotate about every 3 months or so. I once heard that one of the causes of "canoeing" could be that the cigars are face up for an extended period of time. I can't really say for sure, but when i rotate my aging box I also let the cigar rest label down every other rotation.
In my experience with it, and with this particular humi, the bottom gars always seem a little more dry. So, rotating does help. In my particular situation. |
Re: Do you rotate?
Every three months or so...

Re: Do you rotate?
Interesting range of answers. I'm going to put myself in the lazy half.

Re: Do you rotate?
Yes, I rotate the singles, the ones I smoke that is;)

No

Re: Do you rotate?
Never. Can you just imagine guys like M.R.NEE, with the size of the collections they have trying to rotate every cigar!
|
Re: Do you rotate?
No.
|
Re: Do you rotate?
I only rotate the boxes when I take inventory and go a mold/beetle check
|
Re: Do you rotate?
I only rotate my cigars when they fall out of the humidor when I open the door.

Re: Do you rotate?
I will rarely rotate the cigars, however from time to time I will check if any cigars have beetles or mold. I do remember a friend of mine mentioning to me that I should rotate my cigars. I just never took the advice.

Re: Do you rotate?
Never rotated boxes in the cooler or Vino.
Singles in the Vino do get rotated around simply by reorganization efforts....not on purpose. |

Re: Do you rotate?
I do check boxes randomly on a monthly basis to make sure everythign is OK, but thats abotu it.

Re: Do you rotate?
Nope. The top shelf in my cabinet are where the open boxes I'm smoking from go. Anything on the middle or bottom shelf stays where it is unless I move it to the top shelf, at which point a new box replaces it.
It can take years for a box to move to the top shelf, and until that happens they usually stay wherever they ended up in the first place. |
Re: Do you rotate?
without fail, on the first of every month i will:
- take all boxes out of the cabinet humidor. - take all singles out of the tray/drawer in the cabinet humidor. - within the boxes, i will take all cigars out. - i will take the cigars that were on the top, in a dress box, and put them at the bottom, the bottom cigars at the top. - i will remove all the bands on the cigars and put them back on (inspecting for mold under the band). - in cabs, i will take all the cigars out, put them in the fridge for 1.5 days and then put them back in the cab. - i will put all the boxes back in the humidor, but facing the opposite way they were facing originally. also, moving them down one shelf each (top shelf moves to middle, middle to bottom, bottom to top) - the singles i took out of the drawer, i will put back in the drawer EXACTLY WHERE THEY WERE WHEN I TOOK THEM OUT. this is important. - i will then put my pants back on and take a nap on the couch. |
Re: Do you rotate?
In a closed box within a sealed humidor with stable humidity, I don't see how flipping the cigars over would expose to more humidity or somehow benefit the cigars.
Rotating boxes as a whole I can understand, though. |
Re: Do you rotate?
I rotate stuff through my door. Cigars in, cigars out. That's pretty much the extent of it. Seems to work really well. :D
|
Re: Do you rotate?
That would be a big no for me.
|
Re: Do you rotate?
Nope.
Sometimes I think it's very easy to "over think" our hobby. |
Re: Do you rotate?
If I open a box to remove a smoke, I always try to go to the bottom of the box. Dont know why. Other then that, check for mold occasionally in the back/bottom. Never really considered an organized rotation...

I don't really rotate in the box, but do check for mold beetles and any other problems every once in a while. |
