Odd/Rare Opus X cigars

I was looking around on Vitolas at some of the pictures from the Fuente Factory tour. Saw all those strange Opus X cigars, with the spiraled wrappers, culebras, and unique shapes. Are all these one of a kinds, or were they ever released in any quantity? I know of the footballs, only a hand full were released. Says under the picture that some of them may be auctioned or given away. I'd also hate to know what any of them would cost. Anybody ever had of of these? For those they may not have seen them, here's some direct links to the pictures of the cigars in question.

I've always wanted to smoke one of those footballs, but don't think I ever actually will. I've heard that when they're auctioned for charity, they've gone for $500+, though don't remember the figure specifically.

Im pretty sure i read online somewhere that the box of footballs were rolled exclusivly for Dan Marino... i may be totally off but i know i read that somewhere (truth or not) I also so a picture alot like that taken in the fuente facory of all the rares.. Is that where that pic was taken?

Re: Odd/Rare Opus X cigars

I have seen that picture a couple of times and it always strikes me how poorly cared for they look. They are all dusty and the humidor has a big stain on the lid. I kind of looks like they were just rolled as experiments and thrown in the corner. Not to say that is the case it is just what it looks like to me.

Re: Odd/Rare Opus X cigars

I was lucky enough to tour the factory and saw them in person. They truly are amazing works of art. Carlito is a close friend of Dan Marino and donated a box of footballs for his charity auction. If I recall the box sold for $40k.

Plume or dust....it's still awesome :tu

Re: Odd/Rare Opus X cigars

Good pictures. I believe that some of those cigars are trials by the rollers that are attempting new techniques or styles or whatever, never to be released in any form.

The plume looks great on the walls and boxes too. Funny how some of the plume seems to only be forming on top of some of the cigars. :hm

I always enjoy going through Moki's site and looking at all of the rare cigars.

The pictures from the Fuente factory, especially their "vault" are amazing.

Wow! Those are outstanding pieces of art. Though these unique looking smokes are truly one of a kind, I have to agree that they look sort of old and dusty! A nice fresh one would be more than ideal I'm thinking with all the different oils and types of tobaccos mending together in the humidor

Happy smokin' eh?:tu

Some of them are just so pretty that I would almost feel guilty smoking them if given the opportunity.

Not gonna happen...

And even if you could buy one (see above), the price would be astronomical (think in the thousands)...

If those cigars are really worth thousands each, you'd think they would take care of them. They look horrible - all dusty and just strewn about. Maybe that keeps the workers from stealing them...

Only the footballs were ever 'available' (term used loosely) for the auction for charity. All the rest are trials and oddities that would never be available for purchase to anyone. My guess is they had to roll more than just the footballs that were included in the package that was sold and thus leaving those to sit. :tu

Makes sense. Would be really cool to have one of the footballs. I don't know about smoking a 160 RG cigar would go though... probably make you feel like you got hit by a linebacker!

I'm not sure why, but years ago I went to the D.R. to work on a project and made friends with a man that is knew more family then my real family. We were always smoking cigars and I was offered a tour of the factory but never could go due to time frame of the job, regardless that is not why I wanted to post. I was given one of these football never realizing it was anything special. I have keep it in my humidor every since, with its size I just didn't feel like smoking it. The only thing they told me was it was made from tobacco from 1984. I watched football on TV all the time during my stay so maybe they just thought to give me this cigar as a kindness. Today, reading this, I am shocked to learn what I have.

Wow! Where do you live? I'll drive over in my 1939 burgundy and silver 4 door Ford convertible to have a look and share a few sticks. Along with the sticks we can have a shot or two of my Delamain Le Voyage Cognac.

Doesn't the Fuente family fund a school of some sort in Dominican? I think I remember reading something at Tampa Sweethearts about charity events where they let go some special cigars to raise money?

Yes, they fund it through the Cigar Family Charity Fund.

Thanks Doug. :)
I feel better knowing I'm not crazy.
I used to get emails from Tampa Sweethearts, and they'd speak about the particular fundraisers. I'm pretty sure that they work some special cigars into little auctions at those events. I remember seeing a followup after an event that highlighted what they had raised, and a particular gentleman in the cigar industry had bid big money on a signed box of something.
I might be mashing a couple things together, but I don't read a lot of things cigar related anymore that don't come through here or my email.
That was awhile back, too. That compounds the problem. :D

Well answering after 5 years is better than waiting 6? :r :r :r

I was just at the local B&M and they have some DE footballs, from what I've read they really aren't that great to smoke, for all the obvious reasons.

I don't know anything about Jon making footballs but it's certainly possible, some of his rollers are crazy talented. Note, if it's an EGG, then yeah, total gimmick, even he'll tell you that. It's the same blend as the natural dirt or root, I always get those two confused. Funny thing is, he can't make enough of them.

AdamJoshua 02-19-2015 06:25 PM

Re: Odd/Rare Opus X cigars

I'll have to double check next time I'm there, but I'm almost positive they were footballs not the regular eggs and they were in the DE / Liga shelves. Again, I'll check just for the heck of it next time I stop by there.

A B&M by me has football cigars, not sure if they are DE though. They were trying to sell them for the SB. Next time I'm by there, I'll look to see who made them.

Re: Odd/Rare Opus X cigars

The day my friend gave the football to me, he insisted it was intended for four people to smoke. After spending so much time with him and other Fuentes cigarmakers, I respect that opinion, just not sure how one smokes a single large cigar among four people. To expand on this, I actually talked to some of my friends about how we might build something that would allow each of us our own individual smoke with a single cigar. I 100% plan on smoking this football in the next month, for one thing I feel most certain, no cigar built is made to sit in a humidor forever, and this one has been for about 9 years.

Very cool pics! The rarest Opus I have is a LBMF Forbidden X and a Love Story Lost City and those are common compared to the rare ones in that picture!

It's called a puff-puff-pass. Don't overthink it.

As an aside, that football doesn't really appear to be that big and that one person could smoke it.
