Tea, Yerba Mate & Cold Weather

Cool weather has finally struck the Carolinas. Cooling off doesn't mean no more coffee in the morning - it just means:

TEA AND YERBA MATE IN THE AFTERNOONS AND EVENINGS!!!!

(woo hoo)

I broke out the teapot and the neat tea mugs with lids this weekend. Darjeeling leaves are all over the counter and the mate is lined up for a sipping Sunday kind of thing. Special thanks to Seangar and MithShrike for teaching me the joys of green teas and yerba mate.

You be tea?

Lapsong Suchong is my cup o tea. Yerba Mate nice and nutty. I'm a loose tea drinker, usually get my stuff from UPTONs in MA.

I have been using a chai mix with vaniolla soy that just rocks!

I was surprised how much I grew to like mate after just a few cups. I lean to a small amount of honey in mine.

I love Typhoo and PG tips, those british types know what they're doing when it comes to mass produced teas

Twinings has some good ones, the Black Prince or whatever it's called it nice

Made some mate' today that Mithshrike sent me last year. The first couple of times, I made it with too hot of water right away, and got a bit discouraged because it turned out horribly bitter, today, I got a nice smooth mate' from the french press, just had to put enough cold water in the leaves to temper them a little from the hot water.
Good stuff.

He got me on the program, too. I got to like it real quick like. And after pot #1 I figured out that a pre-stir with cool water and well-off-the-boil water to top up really did matter. :)

Ah good. More Mateneers. :tu

It's been a little while since I've had mate. I've been trying to avoid the stimulants (heart murmur and TIAs have been bugging me) but I think I'll have some tomorrow.

Everyday - after lunch it is either Chinese Pu Ehr (rose petal), Monkey King or White tea. It is not weather dependent for me.

LoL this is true.. but when i normally only drink my tea Gungfucha style, or Pure- straight up.. no added sugar, honey, no Nota' the caffeine has never really affected me...

But Mate' eh.. thats one think i may have to venture into trying one of these days

Those two sites are what I use. Although with my now limited intake of stimulants I don't order so much. Yerba Guru is kind of a backup, Yerba Mate Tea Gourd normally has a better selection and inventory.

Do you all use the gourds as well?
i need to know how to run this haha
- With chinese tea, Gung Fu Cha, Yixing, or Gaiwan, i got it nailed haha :bx

Re: Tea, Yerba Mate & Cold Weather

I have a gourd and bombilla, a portamate, and a French press. The gourd is nice if you want the traditional consumption. The French press is really smooth and great for introducing your friends to it. The portamate is a great on the go solution and it is very close to the gourd/bombilla flavor profile.

Just as aside, it looks like Yerba Mate Tea Gourd has shut down. If the page is correct, both owners has died and now it just redirects to a blog page that the children are using to get comments from people.

Or am I missing something?

Oh no ****... I haven't ordered from them in a while. Karl was cool and occasionally would smoke a stick. We had some good convos.

So Matt, care to give a brief overview for those of us that aren't well-educated in the ways of Yerba Mate? I understand it's tea-like.. but to what degree? Do you need the gourd? Can you steep it like regular tea and enjoy it as such?

Oh yeah - the tea is on every night in the winter at the Moo place. We just finished up a long run of chinese green teas and, right now, we're drinking some very nice black tea (Assam and Golden Monkey) with a little chocolate/chili (very zingy) black tea mixed in.

Gotta like tea on a cold day; I make it at work a few days/week in the winter.

PG Tips seems to have a lot of fans. What's the appeal? Good and easy?

I don't have any fancy words for the review, it's just good.

nice "tea"ness, I dunno, I haven't consumed a lot of different teas, mostly PG tips, typhoo, and some different Twinings blends

Still VERY NEW to this, but to tea- Ya damn right ive been drinking it!

First because of this Strep/Wahooping Cough scare- then just none stop sinus problems with the -43 weather we have been having. Now its up to the 7 mark, so... Decent :hn:tu

Straight chinese greens/ a little oolongs, trying more pu-erh, but with out my Yixing i dont like venturing in that direction :D

I've been drinking the lemon/ginger herbal from Twinings. Tasty stuff, now I just need to find more of it as I'm going through the tea too fast (so far the bag will only do one extract, second one is far too weak). Anybody know of good bulks similar to Twinings?
