Any Sports card collectors here?
I've been collecting autographs, game-used, and rookie cards of baseball and football players for almost ten years now and was just curious if any other CA BOTL were collectors as well.
Lately, I've been selling off some of my lower-end autographs to buy boxes (especially gold medals):ss. |
Re: Any Sports card collectors here?
Sold off my collection of 70s and 80s hockey cards to fund some cigar purchases a few years back. Don't have any left.
|
Re: Any Sports card collectors here?
I was heavy into baseball cards and then sold off most of my non-Yankees cards. Right now they are all in storage until I can dig them out and sell them off along with the rest of my memorabilia.

Same thing. I had a lot of cards from the 80's to the early 90's. Still got the complete set of the first year of upper deck cards.

Re: Any Sports card collectors here?
I sold a bunch of my 'money' cards off a couple years ago when I ran out of money. Still have some nice stuff if it has survived storage.

Re: Any Sports card collectors here?
HUGE collection here. Avid Kenny Lofton collector and TONS of other players...all baseball. Put it this way, I took out a rider policy on my Lofton collection. Game Used cleats/fielding gloves/batting gloves/bat, autographed card, regular card, inserts, 9 seperate 1 of 1 cards, and tons of other obscure Lofton items. Not a great market here in Virginia or I'd be in trouble...LOL!!! I have tons of auto stuff from other players.

Did it with my son for quite some time.
He was fortunate to have a mom as a manager in a property where most of the teams stayed when they came to play in the Meadowlands. Has tons of big names in Hockey, Football and Basketball via that access. Met the likes of Super Mario, Gretzky, Shaq and so on. Lots of cards also stocked away. Here is one we got just a few short months before he died, in person. I will die with it hopefully as no intention of ever selling. |
Re: Any Sports card collectors here?
AWESOME ball! I used to collect all cards. FB, Hoops, baseball, and a few hockey. Sold most of my BIG cards a while back. One of which was a Jordan rookie (had almost that entire year of Fleer cards, so MANY HOFer rookies). Wishing I held onto that one, now. Used to have a McGwire rookie, Jerry Rice, Clemens, Puckett, and MANY others. I think I had like Jordan's first 8 or 9 regular edition cards that were out, and many of the special edition ones. As a kid, though I grew up never seeing him play, and I lived in MN, I LOVED Mantle. The first early prizes to my collection was a pair of Mantle cards I got for Christmas (a '66 and '68 respectively).
Had several autographed cards that I also sold. It was when the bottom was falling out of the market that I sold my stuff off. I wish I still had some of it, because of what the money went to (stuff that I let my ex-wife keep in the divorce so long ago). I know I still have some things left. I'll have to see if I have anything of value remaining. |

Re: Any Sports card collectors here?
Used to be heavy into basketball cards. I had over 25,000 cards in the late 90's, mostly commons, but sold everything I had except for the Jordans. Then I got serious about the Jordans in the early 2000s, buying lots off of e-bay and stuff. Still have around 3 or 4 thousand Jordans, plus a couple tubs of other stuff; magazines, starting lineups, McD toys, even a playboy from 1981? when he was still at NC. WAY too much stuff!

Re: Any Sports card collectors here?
Just remembered......anyone ever recall flipping cards against a wall to see who got the closest to the edge? Remember if you if you landed on another card it was "topsies"? If you leaned it against the wall, it was "leaners"? All would try to knock your leaner down. Whoever got the closest won all the cards tossed. We use to play in groups of up to 10 of us. They guy that walked away with the grocery bag fullest or shoe box full of cards ruled.
That all said, it is sad the cards I played that with. I don't want to name the names on my cards when I did this in the very early 70's. Makes me want to cry. |
Re: Any Sports card collectors here?
I got a ton of stuff from late 80s early 90s. Autographs, sets, unopened boxes... I should probabaly take an inventory of everything and see what I can sell it for. I know I'll never get back the money I (Dad) invested, but at least I can get something for them.

Re: Any Sports card collectors here?
I was a huge collector and still have a room full of all types of cards from the mid-80's to mid-90's. I can't wait until cards come back into popularity which should be right as the economy comes back from this little depression based on history.

Re: Any Sports card collectors here?
In 1962, right before we moved from Kansas City to Nebraska (I was 15 years old), mom threw out 3 shoe boxes full of bubble gum baseball cards along with a big stack of Superman and Batman comic books.
Thanks, mom. WyoBob |
Re: Any Sports card collectors here?
Baseball autographs and memorabilia have been a big hobby of mine since I was little. I used to collect cards but focus specifically now on autographs and memorabilia.

Re: Any Sports card collectors here?
At one point a few years back I had about 80 game worn NHL jerseys. I sold most of them to finance gutting and re-doing my old townhouse. The rest were sold later to start my cigar collection. It was on a game-worn hockey jersey forum where I first took the username "icehog3".
|
Re: Any Sports card collectors here?
I don't collect them any more. When I was a kid I did and still have a stack of cards from 80's and before. For years I have wanted to get rid of them. Maybe a cigar trade for one of you collectors:P

Re: Any Sports card collectors here?
Got tons of Basketball cards. Lots of Kobe and KG (and other players that started around this time) rookies. Thinking about selling alot of them off for some extra cash. Although I feel like the value of cards has really hit rock bottom.

Re: Any Sports card collectors here?
I have a bunch of signed jerseys & mini-helmets along with a bunch of cards. My entire collection is either from Steelers or Penn State players as far back as 1975.

Re: Any Sports card collectors here?
I have some baseball cards from pre 88 into the 70's. Now they just sit there. If I decided to sell them what the best way not to get completely ripped off? Of course whomever I sold them too would have to make a considerable margin but....

Fist, buy a beckett(price guide) specifically for baseball cards. Your best bet would be to look up the more popular players you have cards of from each of those years. Once you've identified the pricier cards, go to ebay, do an advanced search and check the "completed items" box. If it's a price you're comfortable with, then list it there. If not, you could then go to an online trading site such as : sports card forum and post a WTS thread. If you need any more help, shoot me a pm |
Re: Any Sports card collectors here?
I do collect cards and other memorabilia but mostly silly stuff or cool stuff I can get for cheap. A card store near me sells unopened boxes of hockey cards from the late 80's/early 90's for about 10 bucks. Me and my buddy will buy them and just have fun opening them and remembering all the players. I have a pretty big box full.
As for the silly stuff I collect, its mostly from players I liked and things like that. I have a Ron Francis Maple Leafs Jersey, an NHL 75th Anniversary jersey from Kellogs (I collect ANYTHING with the 75th logo on it) and my prized posession... A softball autographed by Robert Lang lol |
Re: Any Sports card collectors here?
I have an autographed Ryan Leaf rookie Chargers jersey.. anyone want it? :r
When I was a kid, I had a huge memorabilia/sports card collection: Lew Alcindor rookie card, Stan Musial, Bart Starr, all kinds of stuff. I even had a baseball signed by all of the '73 Oakland A's. I gave all of it away to a neighbor kid 'cause I had a crush on his sister. Thought it would get me somewhere with her. Didn't happen :D |

Re: Any Sports card collectors here?
The football season's nearly over. It's almost time to pick up 09 products on the cheap for you collectors out there.

Re: Any Sports card collectors here?
I have several binders full of baseball cards in the closet. Most of them are complete sets from the late 80's early 90's. Haven't even touched them in over 10 years :)

Re: Any Sports card collectors here?
I collect autographed cards and the Topps reprint sets, like the 1991 reprint of the 1953 set and the 1994 reprint of the 1954 set (including the 2 Wiliiam's and the Mantle that were printed as specials by Upper Deck)...also have the 1956-57 football reprint set and several others...also collect some other bits and pieces of baseball & football memoribilia...my youngest brother also has a ton of memoribilia that he collects, but then he's a sports agent for real...a real Jerry Mcquire...handles football only and has about a dozen guys or so on various teams around the NFL...

Re: Any Sports card collectors here?
Used to collect baseball autographs and had a very nice collection. Have sold off much of it, but still have about 500 signed 8 x 10s that were personalized to me. When I collected, most players would still sign through the mail.
Now, frankly, E-Bay has ruined that hobby. |
